Lost In The Shadows

I’m Brooklyn Addison. I prefer to be referred to by my middle name which my dad gave me: Malia. Brooklyn screams your typical stuck up, bubbly and full of life teenager but that was the old me...

8. Lost and Found.

Life; you don’t appreciate it until you watch it be taken out of someone else.

“I can’t… what did we just do?” I cried, walking up and down the street.

“You will never tell anyone what just happened in there okay? You understand me! You go back to your normal life. This NEVER happened.” He was as traumatised as me, his hands were shaking as he screamed at me.

“He should be here by now, ugh!” Mason shouted, stamping his foot on the ground.

Trembling with guilt, fear, everything possible I said, “W-who is he?”

“Our ride out of here.”

The “He.” Needed to hurry up, I was about to have a mental break down in the middle of the road. It was thundering down with rain and all I had on was a little t-shirt and trousers, you didn’t really plan outfits for an escape. All I wanted to do was be with Aiden, I just wanted to cry in his arms and never let go.

Mason’s friend dropped me off at Aiden’s house. I didn’t want Aiden to see me like this, my hair was soaked in rain water and my eyes were red from the sobbing but I couldn’t go home. I hadn’t been officially discharged, so my dad would’ve just sent me right back there. I hadn’t really thought this whole plan through, was I just going to live at Aiden’s so my dad wouldn’t find me? I really doubted Mia would like that.

Treacherously, I knocked on the door a few times. He was probably sleeping, it was 3 am in the morning. A couple of minutes later, Aiden opened the door rubbing his eyes.

“Malia?” he was still half asleep, it wasn’t until a few seconds later that he realised.

“Oh, my god.” Embracing me from the floor, he wrapped my legs around his waist, placed my hair behind my ears and spun me around. “I could just kiss you right now, I’ve missed you…” he exclaimed looking me dead in the eye. In that moment, I didn’t care about anything: his girlfriend, my guilt, my pain. A wave of selfishness and everything was gone. “Well, I’m waiting.” I said smiling. He put his soft palms on my cheeks and slowly our lips connected. I’d thought about this moment every day in that hell, it was the only source of hope I had. I breathed out and said, “I’ve missed you too, Aiden.”

“Sorry, I didn’t even ask. What are you doing here? I mean… I’m very happy you’re here but shouldn’t you be in…”

“You can say it; Rehab” I laughed. “Anyway, I have a feeling, I’m going to be a lot better now. I’ll explain it all tomorrow, but for now I just want to sleep.”

“Good! Oh Jesus, what a great host I am: leaving you outside in the rain. Come in. I’ll get you some dry clothes.” He said as I jumped down from him.

Following him up into his bedroom, he filled me in on all the drama I’ve missed at school for the last three months but he failed to mention remotely anything about Mia. I had missed most of my senior year; the next step was college and that freaked me out.

His room was your typical 18-year-old boy’s bedroom, bed in the middle of the room, sofa, Tv and desk. Nothing exciting but much better than my prison cell in rehab. Plus, Aiden was in it so that made it ten times better. He rummaged through his draw trying to look for something to give me to wear.

“Uhm, here we go. One of my old t-shirts, it probably will go down to your knees. You know how short you are, my little dwarf.” He joked, mocking me as usual, I didn’t think he meant to say the word ‘my’ because I wasn’t his but I didn’t mind it at all.

“Oh sorry, Mr. Tall man! Well, if I wasn’t a lot shorter than you, you wouldn’t be able to pick me up the way you did.” I said, innocently flirting with him.

“Hmm, I suppose that’s true.” Aiden replied, smiling. “I’ll just wait downstairs while you get changed, do you want anything to eat?”

I laughed quietly.

“What?” Aiden asked.

“Nothing. Um, I’m not really that hungry but thanks.”

A few minutes later, I sat at the end of the bed waiting for him to come back up. I wasn’t sure what the sleeping arrangements would be but I knew he wasn’t the kind of guy who would take any chance to just sleep with a girl. I knew nothing would happen anyway, he had Mia and I had… problems.

I heard a knock on the door, “Can I come in?”

“Yeah, I’ve got clothes on.” I laughed.

“So, I can take the floor you have the bed?” Warily, Aiden asked.

“Cool, I’m cool with anything. Well, not any… Let me just stop talking.” I said.

Aiden started to make his bed on the floor, he gathered many blankets and laid them neatly. For a minute, he just came and sat next to me on the bed.

“Mia and I broke up.” Aiden stated, staring into thin air.

“What? Oh, okay. Woah. Are you…”

“I’m fine, I wasn’t happy with her.”

This changed everything, he was single again. The kiss we had wasn’t anything wrong because he wasn’t anyone’s anymore, he was just Aiden. After that, he didn’t say anything again, he just got on his ‘Floor bed’ and turned the other way.

I laid in his actual bed, thinking for hours about; life. Sleep was overrated, I found it so hard to close my eyes and just forget about everything.

“Aiden?” I whispered.

“Malia? Can’t sleep?” He whispered back, I don’t really know why, no one else was in the house.

“Can you come and lay up here for a bit?”

Slowly, he got up from his most likely uncomfortable bed and laid next to me, staring up at the ceiling. For the next few minutes, he didn’t speak. Finally, he turned around; facing me.

I started to talk but then abruptly, he cut me off…

“I think I’m in love with you Malia.”

“W-why? How do you know?”

“Well.” He said, taking a long deep breathe. “The thought of you with someone else makes my heart ache, it makes my stomach drop and it makes me feel like my lungs are caving in. I know I love you because I could talk to you and never get tired of hearing your voice or your laugh, never get tired of watching you smile. I could never get tired of you. Never.”

I knew he liked me, but I never knew he loved me the way I loved him. That was a fact, I did love him but I’m just frightened of opening up again; if I do, I’m just giving someone the opportunity of breaking me. I couldn’t do that because I’m afraid I’ll never be capable of closing up again.

“You don’t have to say it back.” I said smiling at her face, it was perfect but it wasn’t everyone’s choice of perfect, it was mine.

I knew she had a hard time opening up to people and that was fine, I had all the time in the world. I wasn’t going to push her, I just knew. She placed a simple kiss on my cheek and rested her head on my chest.
