Lost In The Shadows

I’m Brooklyn Addison. I prefer to be referred to by my middle name which my dad gave me: Malia. Brooklyn screams your typical stuck up, bubbly and full of life teenager but that was the old me...

Chapter Ten

I heard a girl say…. “Did you hear about Mia?” I stopped for a minute, trying to listen in. The girl continued, “She’s pregnant.”

Storming down the corridors, I searched for Mia. After looking everywhere, I spotted her talking with a bunch of girls. “Is it true?” I had no right to be angry, Aiden was her boyfriend in the first place, officially anyway, but I didn’t care.

She took a deep breath and stepped aside from her friends, “Is what true, Malia?”

“Oh, you know… You being pregnant with my…” I stopped, he wasn’t ‘my’ anything yet. “With Aiden’s baby?”

“Oh, hell. Whatever, everyone knows now anyway. Yes, it is true.”

I needed to speak to Aiden so I started to walk off, until she murmured to her friends “Bitch.”

“What did you just call me?”

“A big ol' Bitch. Yes, don’t act like everyone wasn’t thinking it. You are the one that broke up everyone’s favourite couple.” Mia said, chanting all her words.

“W-what? What are you talking about?” I said, astonished at what she meant.

Laughing to her friends sarcastically, she said “You are the reason Aiden and I broke up. Oh, come on. He was madly in love with you, I could see it when I first met him. The way he looked at you, at first I just avoided the signs because I thought you guys were just best friends. But no, when you became ‘Sick’. He ended things.” She came closer to me, right up in my face and whispered, “Are you happy? Look what you’ve done, you little Bitch!”

I pushed her out of my way, not giving her the reaction she wanted. I was furious and guilty all in one. All this time, I thought Aiden liked her, I never knew he loved me at that point. None of this would’ve happened, the drugs, Charlotte, even the baby. But, things were different now, there was a child involved. I can’t believe he made me think we were going to be happy, together.

People were staring at me as I walked away from her. I thought they would be making up rumours about why I was gone, not about Aiden. I could hear them all whispering about me, everyone down the corridors. I never even knew about all of this, it wasn’t my fault. Well, maybe it was.

For the rest of the school day, I avoided him. I skipped the classes Aiden and I were in together, luckily it wasn’t a lot.

“Malia!” I heard Aiden’s voice call out to me, I kept walking rapidly. Trying to get away from him, I couldn’t deal with this right now. Quickly, he caught up to me. “Hey.” He said, leaning in for a kiss.

“What? What’s wrong?” Aiden asked, looking surprised.

“Did you not think I would find out? I can’t believe you, wow. I actually thought… No, you know what. Why should I be giving you the time of day?” I started to walk off again.

“What are you going on about?”

“She’s pregnant, Jesus!” I stormed off, feeling everything from betrayal, anger, jealousy, hurt. Running out of the school gates.

I had a therapy session straight after school, it was another one of mine and my dad’s ‘Agreements’ so I could actually leave the house. Every single one of them was the same, it was horrible. Talking about my feelings to a stranger made me queasy. What was the point?

As usual, I was drained after seeing the shrink. It was always dark after my sessions, so creepy. I heard foot steps behind me, for ages. Suddenly, I felt a hot breath of air on my cold neck. A hand went over my mouth as I tried to scream. The mysterious person, pulled me into an alleyway nearby. My eyes flew open to see, Mason, my
mysterious rehab friend.

“Ugh! You idiot. I thought someone was fricking kidnapping me.” I shouted, hitting him in the chest. He laughed, as I screwed my face. “What are you doing here?” I said, confused, I thought he was leaving LA.

“Well, I’m staying in a hotel nearby, I thought we could go for a drink.”

“So you followed me, basically? Plus, you do realise I’m 17, legal age is 21.”

“Ah, you can’t tell. Come on?”

I had nothing else to do, free drink, why not?

“Come on, I want to get out of this stupid alleyway anyway. It’s giving me the creeps.”

The bar he took me to was below his hotel, it was quite busy for a Monday night. Luckily, the bar lady didn’t even ask for ID because she was so preoccupied with other customers.

“Told you.” Mason smirked. I looked at him, gulping down my drink.

“You’ve been having nightmares too haven’t you? About that night.” he asked.

“How did you…”

“I can tell, that look in your eyes.”

“Let’s not talk about that right now…”

We stayed in that bar for ages, drink after drink. I was getting drunker and drunker by the second.  Hours went by, talking, getting to know each other a little bit more. It was like, we connected because we went through the same thing, the same horrible thing.

“I should go, it’s getting late.”

“Are you crazy? You’re drunk Malia, your parents would kill you.”

He was right and he didn’t know about my mum, my past.

When we walked into his hotel room, I looked at him for a minute, his midnight black hair, his leather jacket. Mason was like a piece of forbidden fruit that I couldn’t have, but I think I wanted. What we were going to do was the kind of thing, that you didn’t think about, it just happened in the moment. Quickly, I kissed him passionately, one hand tightly holding onto his hair, the other gripping around his neck. The kiss was different, nothing like with Aiden. Aiden was gentle but Mason… The fact that we shouldn’t be doing this made us want it more. Our lips connected like our lives depended on it, all my anger was channelled into him. We kissed each other for longer than I could remember; I lost myself in his touch that night.
