Lost In The Shadows

I’m Brooklyn Addison. I prefer to be referred to by my middle name which my dad gave me: Malia. Brooklyn screams your typical stuck up, bubbly and full of life teenager but that was the old me...

12. Lost and Away.

Chapter Twelve

Days past after Aiden overheard Mason and I. I know I needed to give him some space but it had been long enough, I needed to explain to him that I still loved him and nothing had changed. Yes, that kiss was everything but Mason wasn’t the relationship kind of guy, he was just fun to be around.

Hesitantly, I knocked on Aiden’s door. Remembering the last time, we were here together, so happy and content. That cute, tanned face that I knew and loved, opened the door. His face dropped and the fact that my entire presence made him miserable told me that I had screwed up, horribly.

“Please, can I explain?” I said, nervously.

“Malia, there’s nothing to explain. You kissed someone else, I know that we weren’t official yet but I really thought we had something.”

“Just let me in, Aiden please. If you hear me out and still hate me then I won’t bother you again but I have to try.” I pleaded.

I opened the door wider for her to come in and take a seat.

“I understand if you hate me, but trust me I regret it. I don’t know how or if I can ever make it up to you. I’m just so sorry Aiden.” She said quietly.

I could see the regret in her eyes, I had to fight the urge to tell her it was all ok and wrap my arms around her because it wasn’t ok.

“I don’t hate you Malia. I could never hate you, I love you too much, still. I do, but I don’t want to.”

Malia let out a deep blow of air as she came closer to me, placing her hands in mine. “So, I know it’ll take time for us to get back to the way things were but for now, can we at least be friends?”

Moving away from her, I sighed. It wasn’t her fault, but a ‘Friendship’ between us wouldn’t work. It made my lungs tighten and my heart weaken when we were apart but she would be hurting me whenever she was around now, even though I know she probably isn’t aware of it.

“I said I didn’t hate you, but it doesn’t mean I’m not mad at you. Every time I look at you, my heart breaks all over again and it infuriates me.” I said slowly, carefully.

Her face saddened quickly, saying “Aiden. I can’t not be around you. I can never, not be around you.”

It really enraged me that every time I looked at her, I imagined seeing that Mason guy kissing her, touching her. The only way for her to see that was to push her away like she does best. Getting up, I told her to leave.

“No, Aiden. I’m not leaving!”

Hurriedly, I picked up the vase on the side table and threw it across the room. The anger was building up inside of me, every time I saw them beautiful brown eyes of hers, it tore me up inside.

I couldn’t believe he acted like that, I had never seen that side of him before so I knew how I much I had hurt him. Having to clear my mind, I went to the Santa Monica Rooftop. The Santa Monica Rooftop was always my favourite place to forget everything that was happening in my life, the view of the calming coast relaxed me in a way nothing else ever could. As I gazed across the endless sands, the peachy sun began to go down. Waves lapped against the shore line creating an intricate pattern along the smooth sand. The sun, now a fiery orb, receded onto the sapphire oceans below. Even from high up there, I could hear the palm trees swaying in the wind as if they were whispering to each other in a quiet hush. Watching from afar, I could see the citizens of Santa Monica living their normal lives, probably coming back from school and work, having fun with their friends; if only life was that simple and easy. I swayed my legs on the ledge, it felt like I was flying high up in the clouds, like a god but gods had power and control, what did I have now?

All my rushing thoughts were stopped, when I heard the vibration of my phone.

MASON: Where are you right now?

Me: Santa Monica, why?

Mason: I’m on my way, be at the pier in ten minutes.

Me: Okay??

Running down to the pier, I contemplated about what he wanted; I was in such deep thought and he ruined it.

The salt from the water ran up my nostrils, leaving a tingling feeling in my nose. The sun had now transformed the sky into a vibrant but simplistic pink colour, giving me a sense of warmth.

“Malia!” I heard Mason bellow from a few steps away, waving at me.

When he got closer, I said “Hey, Mason. What is it?”

“This is going to sound very crazy, but come away with me!” he articulated enthusiastically.

“Well, school has finished now and New Mexico is only a few hours away. Let’s be crazy and have some fun for once!”

This is what I enjoyed about Mason’s presence, he was so spontaneous and free. Thinking about it, I had absolutely nothing to lose.

“Wait, but what about clothes and of course, flights?”

“Oh, god no! Malia, I don’t do boring vacations, I do road trips. We take nothing but a few notes, the clothes on our body and my motorbike, baby!”

“Oh, come on! Let’s do this.”
