They got back into the car and drove to Davidson’s Linn where there was a waterfall. They spread a blanket next to an old dry stone wall that the farmers had made then took out the cushions and the food hamper. Helen brought the bag with the thermos flask and they sat and ate the lunch that Jim had made. “This pork pie is delicious Jim she said as she took little bites because her jaw still ached. The sun was shining now on this lovely day. It was the 6th of May 1963 and summer had arrived. The wild flowers blew in the gentle breeze as Helen and Jim talked during their lunch. She felt totally relaxed in his company. The only sounds they could hear were that of the sheep way up on the hillside. After lunch they packed up all of the plates then James shook the blanket. He folded it neatly and put it into the bag and they drove to Carlisle. The stunning countryside with its streams and green hills were broken up with the Roman wall that stretched as far as the eye could see.

They went inside the cathedral with its beautiful stained glass windows and starry painted ceiling, then the saw the citadel before going into the Tullie museum to have a look around. They were surprised to learn that Frankie Vaughn, Tommy Steel, and even Engelbert Humperdinck had performed there. The walked through the streets Jim took her hand as the walked around and saw the House of Malt. They also went to the Carlisle Castle and had a look around before getting back into the car

They drove onto Whitehaven to the marina where they stopped off at a café and had a cup of coffee.

It was now four thirty, the day had gone so quickly Helen though, but she knew there would be plenty other days that she and James could spend together.

They made their way back home again. It was with great sadness that Helen had to leave Jim again. He kissed her tenderly in the house as she came in to help him carry the picnic things.’

“When will I see you again Helen.’

“I will call you; thank you for a wonderful day James. It was so nice to get out into the fresh air. ’ She waved as Jim stood in the doorway as she got back into her car and drove away.’

She reached her house at five thirty five and put on the gas to heat up the beef stew that she had made her husband. The potatoes didn’t take that long to peel and cook. Once they were boiled she added butter and some milk then mashed them in the pan.

When Thomas returned he went straight into the bedroom where he took off his work suit and changed into his brown tweed suit that he wore when going to play cards with his friends. Helen never spoke as she put out his dinner then left him to eat it alone.

She was going to tell him that she wanted a divorce but she was frightened of what he might do to her if she told him.

Finally he broke the silence by telling Helen that he was meeting his friends and wouldn’t be home until late. He wrapped up a bottle of single malt whiskey in a bag before leaving. She waited until he had left then got herself ready. She rang James and asked if she could come over.

Jim was glad she had rung him and asked her to come straight over.

When she got there she flew into his arms and they kissed over and over. Jim led her to his bedroom where they spent the whole evening making love. They showered together and even in there their passion was not daunted. He lifted her up and she clung to him as the warm water ran down their bodies.’
