“Drive me to the Gibraltar Rock would you Al’

“Yes Mr McCullough.’

Albert drove the car along the sea front not speaking at first until Sid asked what had been happening in North Shields since he’d been away.

“Di you hear about the murder; they say it was an accident but everyone knows it was murder alright?’

“Murder!,’ who was murdered?’

“They pulled Johnny Foch’s body out of the Tyne on Friday night.’

“Who was he?’

“Johnny was a well known grass; he was a poof as well; he knocked around the bars in Shields.’

“Why was he killed?’

“Well the rumour going around is that he grassed on Paddy Leonard and he was bumped off.’ “The police are treating it as an accident because he was so full of alcohol that night. “They say he fell in and drowned but the word is that Leonard had him killed because he told Paddy Devlin where his drugs were hidden.’

“Poor Foch said Sid with a hint of cynicism in his voice .’

“Well he won’t be grassing anyone else up now.’

Albert swung the car slowly around into the car park and then got out and opened the door.’

“I’ll be about and hour at the most said Sid as he went into the Gibraltar Rock Pub.’

Harry “Basset” Challenger was a crooked solicitor who defended both Paddy Leonard and Paddy Devlin. He fabricated evidence to get his clients off in court. He was well paid by both men to keep them out of jail.

“Hello Sid said Harry in his gruff voice as he stood at the bar in a long coat. A life of chain smoking had done something to his throat.’ His face has that many wrinkles he got the nick name “Basset” after the hound dog.

“Do you want a drink?

“Scotch with ice please.’

“Two double whiskeys with ice Jack said Basset to the man behind the bar.’

“The barman swiftly poured out the drinks from the optics then added ice and Sid directed Basset to a seat where they could talk and not be overheard by anyone.

“What you got for me then said Basset?’

“Half a million of top quality resin.’

Basset let out a low whistle before saying; “I thought you were in the property development business?’

“I still am but a business opportunity came up that was hard to turn down. “ Now do they want it or not?’

“Let me make a couple of calls.’

Basset got up then went to the corridor where he picked up the phone and spoke to his contact.’

“He returned shortly after and then nodded in Sid’s direction.’

Bring the money to Lloyds Bank on Monday at 2 pm; I will bring the packages.’

“The price is none negotiable. “ Its half a million or I will walk.’ “I’m sure there are is man in Newcastle who would gladly take this off my hands.’

“I’m sure you are right. “ They want the gear; the money will be there on Monday don’t worry.’

“Once the money is safely into my account then the exchange will be made.’

“It has been nice doing business with you.’

“Is this a one off transaction or can you guarantee a regular supply of the goods?’
