The girls were all getting themselves ready to go out. The band last night at the King Street Club had been a success and they had got a couple of bookings. They were all going to the Percy Main Club tonight to see Teddy Berg who was a singer.’

As usual they all headed to Anne Colquhoun’s house and piled into her room so she could do their make up as she was the only one who could do it right.

“Have you got any Pepsi Cola in the house Anne?’

“We might have, why?’

“Liz Turnbull pulled out a bottle of vodka from her bag.’

“Just a minute, I will go and have a look.’

When Anne returned she was carrying a tray with some glasses and a bottle of Dandelion Burdock.

“We’ve got no Pepsi.’

“That’ll do pour some into the glasses.’

Liz had a taste of it then put her lips together and shrugged her shoulders.’

It’s not Pepsi but it ain’t half bad.’

“Pour some in ours then Liz and don’t be shy.’

“We just invented a new cocktail what we going to call it?’

“Black Burdock,’ said Pat.’

“No that’s not classy enough.’

“How about calling it Black lion?’

“There’s no such thing as a Black Lion is there.’

“How about if we called it Black Cossack said Anne?’

“Now that does sound classy.’

“Black Cossack it is then; that’s what we are all on tonight. The girls all clinked their glasses together.

“I want to see old Joe Kerrigan’s face when I order a Black Cossack and he won’t know what the hell I’m on about.’

“Aye the smart arse thinks he knows everything; let’s keep him guessing.’

“Hey where is Edith and Betty; they are cutting it fine aren’t they?’

“Well they’d better hurry up or we won’t get a seat.’

“If they are not here in another ten minutes we are leaving said Pat; sister or no sister.’

“Here let’s have another drink eh.’

It was just after ten to six when Edith knocked on Ganny Howe’s door. She answered it and Edith went inside.

“Listen Betty will have to rest, no lifting, or bending for a few hours alright.’ “Here are the towels and other stuff in that bag over there.’ “I will go and get her she’s lying down.’

“When Betty came out she was walking slowly holding her stomach.

She had her coat on and thanked Annabella for all her help.

“Don’t forget what I’ve told you to do mind Betty.’

“I won’t Mrs Howe don’t worry.’
