Edith Holding answered the door to Betty Peacock and told her to come in whilst she put her coat on. Edith’s mother came out of the scullery. “Are you alright lass?’

“I’m a bit worried Mrs Holding.’

“It will soon be over pet; yes it will hurt for a while but think on. Better to suffer a little bit of pain than to bring a whole lot of pain if your father were to find out.’

“Edith is going to bring your towels and underwear here and I will do them for you.’

“Thank you Mrs Holding, I appreciate that.’

“There’s only us that knows about this and that’s the way it will stay.’

“It will never be spoken about again in this house after today or any other place.’

“Thank you I’m grateful to you both.’

“Go on now, get this over with.’

“You will be there a few hours and our Edith will come and collect you once it’s over.’

The two girls walked up the street and headed towards Silkey’s Lane where Ganny Howe lived. The ex midwife had been present at so many births and abortions done by heartless doctors who told them to stop having sexual relations because no respectable girl did that kind of thing. It was then that she started doing them herself. “Annabella Howe was sixty two years old and had been married for only a few short months when her husband Robert was killed in action during the Second World War. She lived on her pension and a small army pension. She never married again after bringing up her son on her own. Colin Robert Howe her son was forty two and was a sergeant in the Green Howards based at Catterick Camp. He was married with three children. They lived happily in Shipley in Huddersfield and came to visit in the summer and at Christmas.

Edith stopped at the house and knocked on the door. Annabella answered and asked them to come in.

“Hello lass said Annabella; I hear you have a little bit of trouble you want me to take care of?’

“Yes Mrs Howe.’

“Did you bring the money with you?’

“Yes I have it here.’

“Good, hand it to me then just go into that room there and undress, “you brought a nightie with you didn’t you?’

“Yes I did.’

“Edith you can come back at six o’clock for her.’ “I will be fine on my own.’

“See you later then Betty.’

Betty walked into the room and closed the door.
