Albert Nicholson got the call to pick up Sid McCullough from the airport; he’d only been away three days. He’d just dropped someone off at the Station so he didn’t have far to go. Swinging the car away from Newcastle Central Station he headed for Ponteland. When he arrived Sid was waiting. He’d given the car a good spray before hand so that it didn’t smell so bad.

He got out when he spotted Sid coming out and opened the boot.

“Nice trip then asked Albert.’

Not bad at all; go canny with those cases some of them have booze in them.

Albert picked up the three cases which were heavier than they were when he went plus he only had one suitcase going out. “Here he said as he passed him a sleeve of cigarettes. “ A little thank you Al,’ he smiled then got into the car.’ “It smells a lot better in here than the last time anyway.’

“Where do you want to go Mr McCullough?’

“Drive me to the Grand hotel; I’m meeting the manager there this afternoon.’

Albert released the hand break and put the car in gear then pulled away.

“I’m only going to be home a few hours then I’m flying off again later tonight.’

“You certainly get around Mr McCullough.’

“Gran Canaria this time; I’ve got a property to look at.’ They are flying me over; first class of course and paying my expenses.’

“I’m spending a week over there this time so you can pick me up a week today.’

I will ring the office and ask for you.’

“Thank you Mr McCullough.’

“Pleasure Al’

“You know, I’m looking for a driver full time.’ How would you like to come and work for me?’ “I would certainly pay you more than you earn now and whilst I’m away on business you can still earn money driving people about.’ Plus,’ I will buy you a new car.’ “I have a few friends in the car sales business. I cannot be seen driving about in this old clapped out thing; no disrespect but this has seen better days.’ “So what do you say Al?’

“That is a very generous offer Mr McCullough.’

“I would have to give a weeks notice first.’

“Sid laughed then said “Leave it to me I will sort this out for you.’

“When would you want me to start?’

“You’ve already started.’

Albert headed down the coast road with a bit satisfied grin on his face. His troubles were now over. His salary would be doubled and he’d have a new car into the bargain.’

“Hang around after I go into the Grand Hotel; I’ll make a call to my friend then you can go and pick up your new car.’

“Thank you Mr McCullough I appreciate this.’

“When they arrived Sid jumped out and asked Albert to bring all his cases into the hotel.

“By the way if I am meeting anyone it’s sir okay.’

“Yes sir.’

Albert wheeled two of the cases inside the Hotel leaving them upright in the reception then went back for the other whilst Sid McCullough made a call.’
