Allan went to his room and lay down on his bed for a couple of hours the journey from London had been a tiring one and now he was faced with another long journey but this time they were going to make a new life for themselves.

He drifted off to sleep and did not awaken until he heard a knock on the front door.

He jumped up but his mother went to answer it and she heard her ask Steven and his parents to come in.

“I will pop the kettle on said Kate Forster to Denise and Tony Patterson who came through and sat in the scullery. They had never been abroad in their lives. Kate had only been to France and that was by boat during the war as a nurse. Steven checked all the passports before handing them over to Allan who had made the booking.

Kate and Denise chatted away as Allan made the tea. He slipped four Tetley tea bags into a pot then poured boiling water on top. He stirred the contents then left them to brew. “We have made some sandwiches to take to the airport said Kate and Denise we might be hungry if we have to wait in the airport two hours.’

Allan took down five cups then filled them with tea he filled the milk jug and sugar bowl and put out two spoons. Everyone helped themselves and Kate opened the biscuit barrel and told them to eat as many as they could.

She then took what food was left and knocked on her neighbour Alice Fothergill.

“Here Alice I thought you could use this food said Kate as Alice opened the door. I’m going on holiday and I won’t be back for at least a month so you might as well have it.’ I was also throwing out some clothes and old bedding if you would like it.’

I will be buying some new clothes in er…

“Where are you going?’

Alan came to the door and said “we’re going to Corfu in Greece aren’t we Ma’

That’s right son, Corfu; I couldn’t think.

“Put those in your larder and you can come and take what you want.’

Eeh thanks Kate. I will be down in a minute.’

When Allan’s mother came back inside Allan whispered don’t tell her nowt Ma or the Paddy’s will find out and come looking for us.’

Kate took out all her clothing, coats, and shoes and when Alice came down she said it was a shame to leave good clothes for Staggie the rag and bone man when she could use it. If not she could give some to her older sister who lived in Nile Street.

“Well I hope that you have a lovely holiday and I will see you when you get back.

Here is the spare key Alice; just in case the gas man calls.’

“Send me a post card won’t you.’

“Oh I’ll write you a letter Alice.’

The mini bus arrived and Steven and his father packed the cases in the back.’

Then Allan helped his mother on board. Alice came out to see them off.

Allan had asked them not to tell the taxi driver that they were going to Australia or word would get around and their houses would be burgled.

Once on board; the driver who was called Tom Laws drove them to the airport.

“Going on holiday are we?’

“No,’ we are going to a wedding in London this weekend said Allan. All the suits and dresses are in the cases you see.’

“Who’s the lucky girl then?

“She’s called Patricia Mason; she lives on the great Tottenham road, do you know it?’
