10. Part Two: The Hunter

(Chapter Eight)

Thirty years prior.

Barnabas's well made, slightly worn shoes tapped loudly on the street. His thoughts were focused elsewhere, so he paid little attention to his surroundings. The night was falling fast upon the London streets. The air was already heavy and clouded with fog. He ended up taking several wrong turns before he even noticed he was in unfamiliar surroundings. Empty, dark streets surrounded him.

He was alone, with his thoughts. Or so it had appeared.

Out of the shadows stepped a figure. Tall, muscular, with chiseled features. His eyes were a brilliant gold color, and from his mouth stuck out two fangs. Barnabas' eyes bulged with unbelief, never had he believe such creatures to be real.

The man grabbed Barnabas by the collar of his coat, he lifted him off the ground with inhuman strength. A sickening crack sang out as he slammed Barnabas's back into the brick wall, the sound of bones cracking and breaking is unmatched in grotesque sounds.

Barnabas was in severe pain, it riveted his body and this is when the creature attacked. He grabbed Barnabas by his shoulders, digging his nail in, he shoved him completely to the ground. He whipped Barnabas's head to the side. With a pinpoint prick of pain, the creature had begun to drink Barnabas's blood.

The creature fed on him until he could barely breathe, or keep his eyes open. Barnabas feared he was dying. In fact, that was his belief if only life had been so generous just to let him die.

"I don't want to die, " he said grimaced.

With that, the creature took out a knife, slashed his wrist and placed it to Barnabas's mouth. He couldn't control himself, he bites into the man's wrist. He fed on his blood, he suddenly became aware that he had grown fangs like the creature that had bitten him.

The horse's hoofs clank loudly on the street, followed by the rattling of the carriage the horses pulled behind them. It's dark wood frame stuck out against the thick fog. It went at a slow to moderate pace, it wheels wobbled slightly loose on their axles. It splashed through several dirty puddles, fresh from the fallen rain.

Barnabas stumbled down the lonely streets, the pulsating of his own heart echoed in his ears. All his senses were heightened. Sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. He had never tasted anything so sweet and sickening at the same as the blood he had drunk from the creature that had bitten him.

His heart pounded, kicking the wall of his chest. He had been in pain, but now he didn't feel anything. And he felt everything all at once. Something wasn't right and he knew it. Something had changed withing him. What, he did not yet know.

His breathing was rapid, his lungs burned with desire. But what was it her desired? He wasn't sure, in fact, he had not the slightest clue. His blood curdled just thinking of the strange man who had attacked him, the taste of blood was still bittersweet in his mouth.

Lust hungrily gnaws at his guts. Not lust for the flesh, but something else.

He saw a young maiden singing on the street corner, she held a tin cup in her hand. She was quite alone.

Something comes over him something uncontrollable as he approaches her. He attacks her, clamping his hand over her mouth. Forced her to the ground, and then bit her throat. All emotions had drained from him, all he felt was hunger. Ravage, lustful hunger. She struggled for a few moments, then she stilled as her soul left her body.
