3. Part One: Unrequited Love

(Chapter One)

1823

Genevieve Nicolette smiled excitedly she loved the ballroom dance music, The Waltz being her favorite dance. She loved the social atmosphere of the Ball, she wasn't as interested in men as her younger sister, Evangeline, Genevieve wasn't interested in being courted. Although she was seventeen and quite eligible, however, men in her town didn't hold her interest.

Evangeline, only fifteen, but still eligible, was very interested in men. She was gorgeous, beautiful golden hair, doll round, blues eyes. Evangeline held the interest of many men, but she never held a particular interest in just one man for very long. Genevieve, although pretty looked plain comparative to her sister. She didn't care, her outward appearance meant little to her. She was more concerned with her mind, not her body.

Raven black hair, beautiful dark eyes. Pale and sweet tempered, that was Genevieve. Evangeline was jealous of Genevieve. She envied her genteel manner. She hated her for her almost perfectness. It had been obvious to Genevieve how her sister felt about her, it hurt her at first, but she had come to give little care about her sister's hatred.

But this Ball was different from others that Genevieve had been to. It would become the strangest Ball she had ever been to. She just didn't know it yet.

*~*~*~*

How fine all the ladies looked in their beautiful gowns, and the men in their dapper suits did indeed look fine as well. Even Genevieve thought she looked rather fine herself in her glorious dress. One of her favorites out of her wardrobe, her figure was thin so she didn't want a very tight dress, she did not care to look like a stick. She wished she had a fuller figure sometimes, but it always passed, she divined herself by her mind, not her figure.

One woman stood nearer the corner of the room, she held a long cigarette holder in her hand. She was deep in a conversation with another woman, slightly shorter than the woman with the cigarette holder, and plumper too. Both of them had serious looks on their faces, suggesting that their conversation was more heated than friendly.

The entire room fell silent the moment Barnabas Ashwood entered. The mysterious new stranger in town. Wealthy, a gentleman, well spoken, well mannered, and handsome. No wonder people were taken with him. Genevieve included. He had a darkness about him, it was a beautiful kind of darkness, a shadowed appeal, he wasn't like anyone Genevieve had met before. He was so different, she could tell already, to her that was certainly intriguing. Tall in stature, wide shoulders, and thin. He was an impressive looking man, with an impressive reputation, it was all complimented by a dark side within him.

His striking blue eyes capture her attention altogether, for the longest time all she could do was focus on his mysterious bright blue eyes. Something in them held her gaze, she couldn't actually define what exactly it was, but it was there all the same.

Her heart stopped when she saw that he had noticed her staring at him. Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment, she turned away trying to avoid any more embarrassment. Praying he wouldn't notice her, she kept her gaze away from him altogether.

The next song began, it was a Waltz. How perfectly lovely, Genevieve thought. Momentarily forgetting her embarrassment. She even let the pale, good-looking, Mr. Ashwood leave her thoughts for a brief second. Something that many would find impossible under any circumstances.

"May I have this dance" a voice interrupted her thoughts.

A man's voice, pleasing in tone. A deep toned man, but not too deep. It was an attractive voice. Or so Genevieve thought. She was slightly annoyed, she didn't really care to dance at that moment. Annoyance she couldn't explain exactly.

Her cheeks flushed when she saw who it was who had asked her to dance, Barnabas Ashwood. She looked at him and started to decline his offer. She wanted to be polite, especially after starring at him in the rude manner she did.

"Please Miss Nicolette."

If she hadn't been so taken with him, she would have asked how he knew her name.

He holds out one of his hands out for her to take, and she does. For some reason, she felt as if she could not refuse him. He moves gracefully on the dance floor as if he had years of practice. She was amazed at how smooth of a dancer he was.

"You are a graceful dance partner," he cooed.

"You are the one doing all the work, I'm afraid," she replied with a smile. "I'm not that well of a dancer, really."

"You're very pretty when you smile."

She was surprised by his words, she blushed.

He laughs, "Isn't funny how your face can betray you."

That statement only causes her to blush harder.

He twirled her as the song came to an end.

"It's been a delightful experience Miss Nicolette." he smiles charmingly. "Would it be alright if I were to call upon you sometime soon?"

She was taken aback by his interest in her. I would love for you to call upon me some evening, she thought. But, 'Yes' was all she could say.

With that he departed from her company, to mingle with the other guests. She didn't see him the rest of the evening, that did disappoint her. But for the life of her, she didn't know why.
