18. Chapter Sixteen

Genevieve laid there awake for what seemed like hours, the silence was torture, every shadow made her heart skip a beat. If only he would have left her only, she wouldn't have to do this. If only she had refused to dance with him that evening so many nights ago, if she'd only have known what a demon she had involved herself with. Even loved, that seemed so long ago, and now was an unbearable notion for her.

Her mind was set, she would kill him, she had no other choice the way she saw it. She was sick of his cruelty, he killed people to drink their blood, an ungodly creature. She would be doing the right thing, really.

What could she have ever seen in him, disgust welled up in her, she was overcome with nausea when she thought about him kissing her, and she enjoyed his kisses once. She wanted to hurl, her mind raced, where could he be? Why does time tick by so slowly? But, the question that stung the most was, when the time came, when he did show up, would she be able to drive a wood stake through his heart.

Why me? Why am I the one he wants? I was never the pretty one, never has a man looked my way, yet alone prized me.

Try as she might, she could not stay awake. Her eyes felt like a ton of bricks hung on them, and soon she was asleep.

*~*~*~*

A soft breeze rippled across her, she stirred, her eyes were still heavy when she saw him. He stood in the corner, hidden by shadows, but she could still see him. She threw the covers off of her, she swung her legs over the side of the bed, the floor was cold on her bare feet. He stepped out of the shadows, his eyes locked onto her, looking her up and down as if he could see right through her. She felt exposed to him, this sent chills down her backbone.

She sat there, her eyes focused on him, she knew the stake was only a few inches away from her, so she didn't dare leave the spot in which she sat. All sense of safety had left her, she felt lost in a dark world, far be it from her to ever feel truly safe again.

She had strained her mind to think of why she deserved this to befall her, but beside childish misadventures, she truly could not come up with a sin great enough to deserve this creature's curse upon her. She had lied, done some things she knew were wrong, as all have done, at one time or another, but she hadn't done anything to merit this.

Barnabas eyed her suspiciously, she was careful to keep the stake and her plans out of her mind, she couldn't risk him finding out before she had a chance to finish him, heaven knows what he'd do to her.

Would he kill him?

He swallowed, "Why would you think that?"

She froze.

"I won't hurt you, I give you my word."

She snorted, she hadn't done it deliberately, but she did it all the same.

"What good is your word?" she said calmly.

He came closer to her, "I said I'd stay away for a week, I did that, didn't I? Well, didn't I" he demanded an answer.

"Yes, " she said flatly, her face emotionless.

He traced her lips with his finger, she closed her eyes but didn't pull away. He went to his knees and he laid his head on her lap. Of all things she hadn't expected that what was this? What did he hope to gain, her trust? Her love? He took her hand, intertwining their fingers he held her hand tightly. She stared at him for several seconds, not sure what to do, her breathing had slowed to an almost dead stop. Her body had been tense, she loosened a little and began to run her fingers through his hair with her free hand.

"Don't hate me, Genevieve. I swear that I love you."

She swallowed, but it stuck in her throat as did her words. Still, on his knees, he rose up enough to make eye contact, he took both her hands in his, interlacing their fingers. His hands were so cold against her warm flesh, she pulled free of him. He started to let out a sigh, but she cut him off midway with a kiss. When she looked at him, he seemed genuinely surprised, although pleased.

She unfastens the tie in the back of her nightgown, it still covered her, only her shoulders were bare, she grabbed ahold of his hand as she laid back, a sly and confident smile filled his lips. He climbed over her, he began to kiss her neck and she tensed under him. His kisses steadily became more heated, he kissed on her lips, her cheek, and down the side of her neck. She shuddered, he stopped, he looked at her questioningly.

"Did I hurt you?"

She was surprised, for he sounded honestly concerned. "No, no." her breathing was heavy.

"Your flesh is just so cold" she touched his lips, "Even your lips."

She pulled him back to her. Barnabas's kisses were sinfully sweet, Genevieve yielded to her lust for just a brief moment, she enjoyed his kisses. She didn't understand how a beast's kisses could be so sweet. So gentle.

She had gained his trust, and now she was ready to follow through with her plan. Her fingers searched for her weapon as they kissed, it took only a matter of seconds for her to wrap her fingers around the cool wood stake.

She raised the stake high, ready to plunge it into his back, where she estimated his heart to be.

To her shock and dismay he turned quickly, he latched onto the stake, his nails dug into it.

His fangs slipped down out of his gums, and with a taunting smile he hissed, "Did you really think that would work, my love?"
