9. Chapter Nine

The following morning I go for a drive, to unwind, but did I ever actually get to unwind? No. My car broke down, in the middle of nowhere yet. I wait for thirty minutes, then I hear the hum of a car engine. Finally, I can get out of here.

My momentary relief is quickly stifled when I see who it is. How the fuck can James be every direction I turn?

"Well, are you going to get in or what?"

I huff, "With you? I'll stay right here first."

He cocks his head to the side, he looks at me with his bright blue eyes. "You know what? Whatever, you do whatever you want. I'll see you in ten years when someone comes by and happens to pick you, a total stranger, up."

I look down the ground.

He continues, "I don't know what the fuck your problem is, but you just need to fucking quit."

My rage boils, "You are, you're my problem."

"I don't know why you have to be like this." He sighs, "Look, do you want a ride or do you want to wait out here, in the middle of nowhere. Alone."

I stand motionless, he rolls his eyes and starts to drive forward.

"Wait. Hey, James. Wait."

I open the door but hesitate before getting into his car.

He looks up at me, "Just a ride."

"You promise not to try anything you did last night? It'll be just a ride?"

He scrunches his face in annoyance, "What the fuck did I just say? Come on, get in. I haven't got all day to wait for you to make up your fucking mind."

We drive in silence for about ten minutes. The ticked off look has already left his face by now.

"Can I ask you something?" He doesn't wait for me to answer, "What did I do to make you avoid me like I'm the plague?"

I open my mouth to answer, although I haven't really got one. Before I have a chance to even think, the car slams into something. Something big.

"What the hell!"

He looks over at me, then he climbs out of the car.

"It was just a deer" he looks the car over, "Dammit!"

Apparently 'just a deer' can cause quite a bit of damage. I sit back, letting my muscle go loose, they tensed up from the most moment we made contact with the animal.

After ten minutes, and a whole slew of cuss words from James, he starts the car.

*~*~*~*

Thick black clouds roll in over our heads, the lightning rumbles through the sky. The rain would soon start to fall. I turn to Amy, "Talk again soon?"

She smiles, "Absolutely, real soon."

James comes out to his front porch, looks up at the sky and returns inside his home. Amy turns to me, "He's an interesting one isn't he?"

I look away for a moment, "Yeah, I suppose so."

I can't tell if she was taking a fancy to him, or what. But, I can't help but have this nagging feeling in the pit of my stomach. What if she saw something that happened between James and me? If that is the case it won't take long for the whole neighborhood to find out, including my husband.

All I can do is hope that it is not the case. Hope that maybe despite her possible fishing, she might only have a hunch, and may have not seen anything at all. Then again, maybe I'm just being paranoid. It's an awful feeling, paranoia.

"Have you got a chance to talk to him?" She raises her tweezed eyebrows.

"A little" I add, "but, not really."
