18. Chapter Eighteen

(Present Day)

If there's one thing I hate immensely but must do, it's shopping. What makes it worst is, I can only think about what I saw happen between James and Amy last night. Why? I haven't the foggiest notion, I just can't seem to get it off my mind.

I walk slowly through the store, mindlessly picking things off the shelf I have written on my list. Orange juice, right, I had almost overlooked it. Yuck, I think to myself as I put the cartoon of orange juice in the cart. I myself can't stand the taste of it, but John likes it.

"Hello, Rebecca." I hear a low whisper behind me. It startled me enough to make me jump slightly, even though I recognized it as James's voice. Who else has that smooth, chillingly attractive deep tone? "Did I scare you?" He says laughingly, the beginnings of a smile starting to play across his lips.

I pretend to ignore him, I push the cart forward. He lays his hand on top of mine, "Now, Rebecca, that's no way to treat a friend." He leans his head to the side, and that familiar, cocky smile once again forms over his lips. Fuck, I'd like to knock it off of him. I am in no mood for his fuckery.

A few stray strands of my brown hair fall over my face. He brushes the hair back, I pull away. I look around me quickly, "Are you crazy?" I ask astounded. "Maybe." He replies quietly.

"What if someone saw us?!" He looks at me, "What if?" He mocks playfully.

"Look, I'll meet you at my house in fifteen minutes okay? We can't talk here."

With that, I walk away from him.

I hand James a cup of black coffee, I grasp my mocha cappuccino in my other hand. I take a sip of the hot beverage, it burns my tongue, so I sit it down on the coffee table to cool.

I turn to him, "Alright, James. What do you want this time?"

"I just want to see you that's all. That's what friends do, they talk, catch up on what's happened since they last saw each other."

"Isn't Amy enough for you? Why do you have to bother me?" I snap at him, tired of his games.

"You've been spying on me, naughty girl. I saw you in the window, you know." He stands after placing his drink on the table next to mine.

"I just wanted fresh air. I can help if you're fucking your way through every girl in town, and making a public show of it on your porch!"

He smiles a wide, pleased smile. "Aww, Rebecca. I do believe you're jealous, my dear." He laughs, "Good, very good."

"You did it on purpose, you snake. You wanted me to see you and Amy. You wanted me to get jealous. You really thought that'd make me come back to you." I'm seething with rage because I know I was jealous. But, I can't let him know that. "Don't make me laugh. You're pathetic, the only way I'd come back to you is dead."

He looks up at me angrily, "My, what a wicked tongue you have grandmother." He sighs, the anger disappears from his face. "And today I thought I was going to have so much fun with you."

My heart stops when I hear those words. 'I'm going to have so much fun with you' those were the words the voice on the phone said. So similar. I look at James, "It was you."
