The Girl in Cell 3 (Triple Witching Hour)

Every day SABLE talks to her knight in shining armor, EREN. She says sweet words, tugging at his heart, hoping to steal it. But there is always a barrier between them - a prison cell door. EREN has struck a deal: keep her locked up and his little brother will be out of harms way.

Her cell is inescapable and her placement on death row rises fast. She aims to seduce him and have him break her out. But when truths and lies become one, can she deceive his heart without breaking her own?

58. Chapter 57 - Eren

Eren sat together with the hunchback, whispering, conspiring, scheming. Eren constantly glanced over his shoulder, afraid that someone from the barracks might see him. He knew what he was doing now could get him trialled for high treason. He wouldn’t be even sent to the front lines as a punishment — no, he’d be cast into the mines where political prisoners and traitors worked and died.

He divulged everything he knew about Zofia and he proposed a plan. It was a simple plan; it would require the push of one person and it would be done. And once Zofia had lost her position of power and was barred from the barracks, the hunchback would take action.

The plan was agreed on but they did not shake hands. For such an agreement, only solemn silence was required. They both knew too much about the other; they did not need to shake hands to be sure of the other person’s integrity. It was a though they held knives to each other’s throats and one wrong step would lead to mutual destruction.

“But tell me one more thing,” Eren said. “What do you want with Sable?”

“She is a witch, she has magic and she has a unique history and skill set. There is something about her I want to confirm for myself.”

“And what is that?”

The hunchback looked up from his mug and scrutinized Eren’s face. A smile showing his missing teeth spread across his lips. He snickered.

“You care for her.”

Eren said nothing.

“I can see that you do,” the hunchback said. “One of the many faults of being young is that your emotions always show on your face. Now, now, no need to feel embarrassed about that — every face of every youngster is an open book, one just needs to know how to read it. You will learn to hide your thoughts and feelings as you grow older.”

Eren crossed his arms. “And so what if I do? What do you want with her?”

“Maybe if you deliver her to me, I will show you.”

In the morning, Eren put on his uniform, said good morning and good bye to Kolin and went to the barracks. His heart was pounding and the tranquil air of the morning did little to calm him.

He saluted. Swore allegiance to King’s Pride. He polished his sword. He checked on the prison and then made a report to Reinhard. Everything was normal. He behaved just like he usually did — but...

It was after mid-day that Eren made his move. He did not take on the afternoon shift in the prison and passed it to Marcus instead, who did not seem delighted by that. His face said that there was somewhere else he wanted to be — a different prison.

Eren walked up the stairs, past Reinhard’s office and further up the stairs to the highest floor of the barracks. He swallowed. What he was about to do was a gross breach of the command chain. Unless Reinhard specifically told him to, he was not supposed to seek out High Commander Bloodhorne on his own.

He knocked on Bloodhorne’s door. He had already thought of the perfect excuse. He would first tell the High Commander that he had a message from Reinhard — strange but not impossible. Then once the door was closed, he would tell Bloodhorne about his concerns and then —

It wasn’t a perfect plan. If Bloodhorne did not believe him, then would be punished for breaking the command chain. Reinhard would also hear of his betrayal and then…

In the worst case scenario, he would be discharged dishonorably and Kolin would be drafted to the front line.

“Come in.” High Commander Bloodhorne’s voice was like velvet. Smooth and sturdy, yet it was not the voice of a commander who had suffered the battlefield. No, it was the voice of a man who had seen death and came away slightly annoyed. A man who was entirely sure in himself, his abilities and the possession of wealth and power.

He took a deep breath. Eren opened the door and stepped in. “Officer Eren Galloway,” he announced himself.

Bloodhorne raised an eyebrow. He had waist length wavy black hair, wore a red coat and grew a curled mustache. Despite his appearance, no one ever mistook this man for a woman from behind. He was powerfully built, exuding brute strength and yet his face signaled civilized restraint.

“I have a report from Commanding Officer Reinhard.”

Bloodhorne signaled for Eren to close the door.

“Yes?” Bloodhorne said with languished movements as he opened letter.

“I have a report about Commanding Officer Reinhard.”

The change in words did not escape Bloodhorne. He put down his quill, folded his fingers and listened.

Eren told him everything he knew about Zofia. He told the man about how Zofia was a witch and yet she was a priestess from the Church of Valor. He told Bloodhorne about how she was Reinhard’s lover and he believes that the witch is using her position of power to influence military policy and actions inside the barracks.

When Eren was finished, Bloodhorne did not appear impressed. Rather, he sighed languidly.

“This isn’t the first time that a woman has used the position of her lover to gain power. Do you know that when King’s Pride and the Eisen Kingdom were still one, it was said that when the Old King lost his sight and voice, it was the royal consort who gave orders to the ministers, using her dying husband’s seal. I myself have seen it happen many times in the military — after all, a man’s greatest weakness is a woman whom he loves dearly.”

Bloodhorne pulled out a piece of paper and wrote something with a bored gaze and swift movements of the hand. When he was done, he handed the scroll to Eren.

“These are your orders.”
