46. Chapter 45 - Eren

Eren followed Officer Reinhard out of the barracks and down the cobbled streets to a nearby tavern. The Jolly Jester. Above the wooden door hung a sign bearing the image of a red and black court jester juggling three balls.

The tavern was full of soldiers from nearby barracks. After a day’s work, many of them were unwinding with a pint of ale, chattering, pouring over rumors about their superior officers.

As Eren and Reinhard walked past, many of these men gave them a furtive glance; they could see that the uniforms of the newcomers indicated that they were of a higher rank. Better to be quiet for a short moment than to insult a superior officer.

Eren and Reinhard headed for a table in the corner where no one could disturb them. The barmaid recognized Reinhard and brought over two pints of his regular drink — the Blue Rooster. It was a beer made in the North-West, shipped in by merchants who discovered this tasty brew about ten years ago. Since then it had become a favorite in King’s Pride and the village that made it prospered.

Eren gazed out at the soldiers. Just a short while ago, he was just like them, he thought. He wondered if it was still possible to join them for a drink — no, probably not. His uniform made him different. He was now able to give orders. It was only men of the same rank who could confide in each other at the end of a long day because they shared the same grievances.

He watched one of the men put his arm around the barmaid’s waist. She did not resist and sat on his lab. Eren raised an eyebrow. This barmaid — what as her name again? Right. Tanya. In his memory, Tanya had always been a fiery woman, and Eren suspected that was why so many soldiers came to the Jolly Jester. No one could touch her and she was not to be trifled with. She had little respect for a man in uniform and did not yield to any demands. She was the one woman no one could have and that was why every man wanted her.

Eren smiled inwardly. Perhaps that was human nature, he thought. Men always wanted the woman they couldn’t have.

“No matter where you go, no matter how far you run — I will find you and I will kill you.”

He swallowed. He could steal hear those bitter words and feel her hateful eyes on him. He put his hand to his chest and grimaced. The words of a witch. His heart throbbed with pain.

“Is something the matter?” Reinhard asked. “If you are feeling chest pain, the King’s Pride Army has hired an excellent doctor.”

Eren shook his head. “I’m fine.”

He took a deep gulp from his drink and set it down. “Reinhard,” he began. Formal titles could be dropped here. They had known each other since their school days after all. “What are Zofia’s intentions?”

Reinhard wiped his mouth. “Since Zofia is in the cell with Sable, I will tell you about the Champion of Light.”

“Right.”

Reinhard reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a scroll that had been folded into a square. He gave it to Eren.

“This is a report from High Commander Robert Bloodhorne,” he said. “It details the progress of our front lines.”

Eren read the report. The message was clear. King’s Pride troops had moved into Eisen territory, but were preparing to make a retreat. Holding their ground in enemy territory was an enormous burden on the supply lines and was not feasible anymore.

“I think you understand what this report is saying?” Reinhard asked. He glanced about, making sure that no one else was listening. If this report leaked out, it would be disastrous for the morale of the troops.

Eren pursed his lips and frowned. He smiled with contempt. When the King’s Pride troops first made their advancement into Eisen territory, the news were spread far and wide in the kingdom; but now the news had dried to a trickle and some folks had even forgotten that there was a war going on. So this was their strategy, Eren thought. When there were no good news to report, then it was better to report nothing.

“At this rate, it might turn into a war of attrition,” Reinhard said, “and that is something we cannot afford.”

Eren waited for him to continue.

“But Champion of Light will be the weapon to change this balance.”

“And Zofia is organizing this?”

“Yes.”

Reinhard starred into his mug and Eren observed him tentatively. He decided to ask his questions one step at a time.

“Zofia came from the Church of Valor, yes?”

Reinhard nodded.

“And does she believe in the Word of Light?”

Reinhard snorted. “Does anyone believe in the Word of Light?”

Eren smiled slightly. That was a good point.

“Can we trust Zofia?” Eren asked. “She is a witch and a member of the Church of Valor...”

Reinhard’s nostrils flared and he glared at Eren. “Of course we can trust her.” His voice told Eren to never question Zofia’s motives again.

Shocked, Eren closed his mouth and retreated behind his drink to buy himself a moment of time. He loves her, Eren thought. He has to. Otherwise it would not warrant such an extreme response.

But Eren did not trust Zofia. That look in her eyes, the way she smiled and spoke in her seductive voice — no, she was not to be trusted. But he could not expect objective answers from Reinhard anymore. He had to ask different questions to get the answers he wanted.

“How did you two meet?” Eren asked. “She must be a woman of tremendous ability to wring your heart.”

Reinhard smiled slightly. “It happened about five years ago, right at the start of the war,” he began. “I was still a Senior Officer at that time, and my superior received an order from the king, commanding him to work together with the Church of Valor on a plan a priestess had hatched to win the war.

“My superior officer fell ill around that time and delegated that task to me. Zofia arrived at the barracks as the representative of the Church of Valor and that is how we met.”

“And she told you that she was a witch?”

“Hmm...she told me about a month after we met. She said that the Witch Council has retreated into the mountains and chosen not to take part in this conflict. And she thinks that isn’t right. In this time of conflict, powerful people like witches must choose sides. It is their duty to lend the rightful king their magic. Even if they believe in a different God, it is their duty to serve the rightful king. And if they don’t want to serve, then we must force them to do it. We will harness their magic and create…the Champion of Light.”

Eren raised his cup. “Then let us drink to that. To the ultimate victory.”

“Aye.”

Both men took a deep gulp.

Eren then added: “But never forget that we are your true brothers — your brothers in arms.”

Reinhard put down his cup and nodded with a grunt.
