The Girl in Cell 3 (Triple Witching Hour)

Every day SABLE talks to her knight in shining armor, EREN. She says sweet words, tugging at his heart, hoping to steal it. But there is always a barrier between them - a prison cell door. EREN has struck a deal: keep her locked up and his little brother will be out of harms way.

Her cell is inescapable and her placement on death row rises fast. She aims to seduce him and have him break her out. But when truths and lies become one, can she deceive his heart without breaking her own?

Chapter 38 - Eren

Eren stepped out of the barracks and breathed in the fresh morning air. The sun had just broken the horizon and he could already hear the merchants of the city stepping out, setting up their stalls, yelling at their apprentices who had to rise before the sun. Time was money after all.

He gazed upon the peaceful scene with a sense of confused wonder; it was so strange how the outside world was so serene and peaceful, and yet inside those barracks, down the stairs and behind the reinforced wooden door, there was a prison with so much misery in it. The stifling silence of the corridor. The deadly glares of the witches. Their malicious chuckles.

Was it his fault that things had turned out like this? Perhaps it was. Before he had taken Alisa out of her cell, there was a sense of ironic merriness in the prison; despite their dire condition, the witches made the most out of it. But now that Alisa had been taken away, they were reminded that in this prison, the human guards were their enemy. Enemies had to be killed. And the only thing preventing the witches from killing their captors was the fact that the gransia handcuffs sealed away their magic.

A gentle breeze enveloped him, carrying the gentle scent of flowers of a field somewhere. It calmed his feelings a little. It was the first time in a long time that he had felt this emotion: guilt. And it was the first time a witch had caused him to feel like this. He remembered the look in Sable’s eyes; the confusion, the hurt and the bottomless despair.

She kept asking him where he had taken Alisa, and of course he could not tell her. To reveal the location of Alisa’s cell was to reveal more of the prison layout to her — information that could be used for breaking out. As grateful as he felt towards her, his duty was to keep her behind bars.

And yet his heart felt disturbed. The image of her kind smile came before his eyes. The slight crinkle at the corner of her eyes when they spoke. The sincere gladness he saw in her when he had told her that Kolin was feeling better. Eren concluded that she was likely a good person.

But she was a witch. He wondered how many people she had killed before being captured by King’s Pride.

But if she liked to kill humans, then why did she help Kolin at all?

Perhaps she was just kind.

Perhaps she hoped to gain favors and use him to break out.

Perhaps -

Eren shook his head. There was no point in thinking too much about this.

He was glad that she had never once asked him why he had taken Alisa away. Of course he couldn’t tell her that it was an order he had received. Other witches were listening too. It was impossible to tell which piece of information might be used by the witches to break out. It was difficult to gauge their intelligence, but he suspected that if the gransia handcuffs came off, many witches would take on a different personality. How many would show mercy? He’d rather not find out.

“Where have you taken her? Where?”

The raw desperation in her voice made him grimace. “I have taken her somewhere else. Somewhere safe.”

I shouldn’t have told her that, Eren thought. But he couldn’t help himself; this kind witch behind bars...he felt that she deserved to know at least that much.

But why did Zofia want Sable and Alisa separated? What did she gain from it?

Eren sighed. He suspected that even if he asked Reinhard about Zofia’s plans, Reinhard would not tell him. After all, he was smitten by her.

Eren began to walk away from the barracks. It was time to go home and see Kolin.  Hopefully the boy had recovered.

“Eren! Eren!”

He stopped. He turned and saw that Marcus was chasing after him.

“What is it?”

Marcus came to a stop, breathing hard, resting his hands on his knees. “Commanding Officer Reinhard says he wants to see you.”

“See me about what?” Eren asked with thinly veiled irritation. He wanted to go home and forget about all that had happened today.

“Officer Reinhard said it is about that witch with the blonde hair and green eyes.”

Eren snapped to attention. He made his way back to the barracks.
