The Girl in Cell 3 (Triple Witching Hour)

Every day SABLE talks to her knight in shining armor, EREN. She says sweet words, tugging at his heart, hoping to steal it. But there is always a barrier between them - a prison cell door. EREN has struck a deal: keep her locked up and his little brother will be out of harms way.

Her cell is inescapable and her placement on death row rises fast. She aims to seduce him and have him break her out. But when truths and lies become one, can she deceive his heart without breaking her own?

38. Chapter 37 - Sable

Sable sat in her cell, back against the cold stone wall, her knees against her chest. She listened to the hushed whispers of the witches in neighboring cells, all of them speculating what might have happened to Alisa.

So far, none of the guards had said anything. The merry mood was gone; it seemed that the guards had received orders to keep their mouths shut.

Sable’s heart pounded like mad in her chest, as though it might burst at any moment.

Stay calm, she thought. Nothing was lost — hopefully.

The door at the end of the corridor opened. There was the sound of two knights walking down the corridor. One stopped. The other kept going — until he was at Sable’s cell. It was Eren. He stood before her cell, watching, silent as the flames that burned on the torch.

“Where have you taken Alisa?” Sable asked.

He says nothing.

Sable swallowed. The cold hand of despair reached into her gut. Something was wrong. Before he took Alisa away, she felt that she managed to pry open a crack in his heart by saving his brother Kolin; they even had a friendly conversation together — but now Eren had withdrawn, assuming the stoic expression of a soldier.

She peered at his face. His brows were furrowed and his lips frowned. His eyes were focused on her, but he was seeing something else. His mind was elsewhere. Something was bothering him — but what?

Sable didn’t understand. What could have possibly changed in the span of just a few hours? It didn’t make sense.

She decided to try one more time — even if the mere effort of speaking was done in vain.

“Where have you taken Alisa?”

Eren blinked and he heaved a heavy sigh. “I have taken her somewhere else. Somewhere safe.”

“And where exactly is that?”

He doesn’t answer.

The flames continued to dance. The hushed whispers crept along the walls. The cell doors continued to separate two worlds.

After another hour, the door at the end of the corridor opened and a new set of guards stepped in. Eren saluted them and mumbled some instructions. “Stay away from the witch with the blonde hair and green eyes; she is agitated and needs some time alone.”

The guards didn’t question him.

The heavy door closed.

*  *  *

Where was Alisa?

Was she unharmed? Eren said that he taken her to a safe place — but why? What were his intentions? And why had his demeanor changed?

Sable was crestfallen. Everything she had managed to gain despite her dire circumstances had been taken away from her.

She heaved out a deep breath—

Something felt different. She looked at her arm and saw the Blood Mark she had exchanged with Alisa glowing. A warm sensation enveloped her; it felt like the warm embrace of a mother. Caring and loving. Unconditional.

The Blood Mark pulsed like a heartbeat, the red lines growing brighter until Sable had to shield her eyes.

“Sable, are you all right?” It was Alisa’s voice.

Sable glanced about frantically, trying to identify the source of her voice.

“No one but you can hear me,” Alisa said. “Our thoughts and feelings are connected by the Blood Mark we exchanged.”

Sable’s heart rose to her throat and she wanted to cry with joy. “I’m all right, no one has harmed me, but where are you?”

“I don’t know,” answered Alisa. “I think I’m still somewhere in this prison. Eren took me up some stairs, but he put a sack over my head so that I couldn’t see anything.”

“Up some stairs?”

“Yes, I could tell that I was going up, but I couldn’t tell where. Now I’m sitting inside a new cell.”

Up some stairs, Sable thought. Then this must mean that there is another prison upstairs. She swallowed. Just how many more witches were imprisoned in this place?

“For now we are both alive and well,” Alisa said. “As long as we stay calm, we can plan our next move.”

Sable took a breath. It was time to make a new plan.

A/N: Sable is back! So sorry that the two week break turned into a three week break. I started a new full time job and that has taken up a lot of my time — plus university work. Argh! For now, I think I will update 2-3 chapters every week. How are you all?
