37. Chapter 36 - Sable

Sable and Alisa listened to Eren walk down the corridor, closing the door behind him and leaving Marcus in his place.

As soon as it was clear that Eren would not come down the stairs again, Marcus walked over to the cell closest to the door and began to chat with Svenja—the witch against whom he lost a game of chess.

Alisa smiled ruefully. “He is rather handsome, isn’t he?”

Sable nodded. “Eren...isn’t bad looking.”

“I was talking about the guard, Marcus.”

Sable opened her mouth to reply, but then closed it and blushed scarlet when she realized that she’s been had. Alisa shook with laughter and wrapped her arms around her waist. Sable averted her eyes and pretended not to hear her mockery.

“But really,” Alisa said. “It seems that Marcus is rather smitten by the witch in the first cell. If they had met under different circumstances...”

She sighed and for a moment, she was lost in her fantasies as she watched the romance between a guard and a witch unfold.

“And you,” Alisa pointed at Sable, “Eren is rather handsome, no? And I don’t know if you noticed, but his eyes changed when he looked at you.”

“What do you mean?”

“I suppose you didn’t notice,” Alisa snickered,” because you were too busy blushing like a human maiden when he handed you that apple.”

Sable drew her hand to her chest and took a sharp breath. All of the sudden she felt that she had her privacy violated; a moment that was not to be seen by anyone else that had been exposed. She stopped herself. Why did she feel this way?

She swallowed with trepidation, afraid of the realization that was about to enter her mind. She remembered the warmth of his hand and the grateful smile on his lips.

“If only we all met under different circumstances,” Alisa mused, her voice wistful, her gaze distant.

Sable changed the topic. She had to. She could not bear this embarrassment any longer. “Who is Elina?”

Alisa’s expression grew serious. Her brows furrowed and she pursed her lips.

“Why did Eren ask about Elina?” Sable pressed.

Alisa spoke after long moments of contemplation. “I don’t know how he knows that name, but it is something he shouldn’t know.”

“Why?”

“Elina...she is a witch.”

Sable waited for her to continue.

“I’m surprised that you didn’t know about Elina, but then again, you didn’t know what a Blood Bond was either...”

“Who is Elina?” Sable asked. “Is she powerful? Is she the Queen of a clan?”

Alisa shook her head. “No, she surpasses any Queen. She has a title of her own.”

Sable waited. Alisa smiled ominously.

“The Girl of Time.”

“The Girl of Time?”

“The Girl of Time.”

Sable tilted her head slightly. She had heard of some famous witches before, most of them dead now, but this name sounded rather...undignifying for someone who surpassed a Queen.

“But she doesn’t matter right now,” Alisa said. “What matter is that Eren looks at you with the eyes of a lover and maybe we are just days away from having him hand over the keys.”

“All I did was give him a recipe for medicine,” Sable said. “Why would he— “

“It doesn’t matter,” Alisa interrupted. “I saw that look in his eyes while you were blushing—the gaze of affection, the air of a lover. I could feel it.”

Down the corridor, the door opened. They heard Eren’s voice dismiss Marcus. The door thumped shut. He walked down the corridor, his steady footsteps growing louder until he arrived at their cell.

He had keys in his hands.

He drew his sword. He inserted the key into the cell door lock.

Sable’s heart rose to her throat. Could it really be so easy? Was freedom just minutes away?

The cell door creaked open.

“Eren—  “ Sable began, but she stopped. He pointed the sword at her.

“Witch, you will come with me.”

Panic stormed her gut. The hand of despair gripped her throat and allowed no air to come through.

Eren grabbed Alisa by the arm and yanked her out of the cell. He slammed the door shut and locked it.

“No! No!” Alisa cried. “What do you want?”

“May the Word of Light have mercy on you,” Eren mumbled.

He dragged Elisa down the corridor.

“Alisa!” Sable cried. She pressed her face against the cell door and watched Alisa and Eren fade into the darkness of the corridor.

Sable slumped to the ground. She was alone again.
