20. Chapter 19 - Eren

He had told her his name.

He thought: a first time for everything. He had never told his name to a witch before. During his first meeting with witches many years ago, the witch didn’t care for his name. If he hadn’t run, he would have died. And now during his second encounter with witches, he had asked for her name and she had asked for his.

Sable.

It wasn’t an ordinary name, but it was not unheard of either. If a witch found a human lover and bore a child with him, there was a chance that the father would insist upon a human name.

He felt her gaze on the apple. He knew that she wanted it. If he played his cards right, then he could use that as bait to lure information out of her.

There was a reason why he had ordered the guards to fulfill all of her wishes while Alisa was sick; the desire for good food would grow only stronger after it was given and then suddenly taken away. It was a form of mental torture he had learned many years before. Offer the carrot and then take it away.

And now with her desire for sweet fruit bursting through the seams, perhaps now she was ready to talk.

But there was one problem. He could see the distrustful gleam in her eyes. He could use the apple as bait, but it in her current state, it would not make it any easier to make her talk.

She had asked for his name. He had given it. He decided to let her ask questions and give her answers. Once there was a steady flow of exchange, he could then use subtle questions to lure out her intentions.

“Officer Galloway, tell me, why am I being held here? On what charges?”

According to the guards, she had been asking this ever since the first day. Eren decided to answer honestly.

“You are being held here because you are a witch.”

“What crime have I committed? What have I done?”

“The official records say that currently, you are under the protection of King’s Pride.”

“Protection?” Sable spat with disgust.

Eren loved seeing such an expression on a witch, but no, this would not do. He felt a wall of hostility. He had handled the situation wrong. He would not be able to get any information out of Sable at this rate.

He remembered that many years ago, a wounded soldier visited his village during the autumn harvest. He died of his wounds a few days later, but Eren was placed in charge of taking care of him, and before the man died, he told Eren that years ago, he had served as a spy master. One of the many skills of a spy was the ability to make an enemy trust him even when his true identity was revealed. It was also a skill that kings and queens used in their negotiations with foreign powers.

On his deathbed, the spymaster had told him: “Tell her a secret, a little secret of yours—and she will feel that you have opened your heart and she will open her heart in return. Let truth and deception become one.”

Eren searched his mind. What secret could he tell Sable? What would make her feel that there is a sense of trust?

He smiled. The answer was obvious.

“I have nothing against you,” Eren began. He took out a new apple and made an offering gesture. He did not look at Alisa. There was nothing he wanted from her.

Sable did not move. Suspicion was still in her narrowed eyes.

Eren sighed. He took a bite out of the apple. “See? It isn’t poisoned.”

Sable reached through the bars and snatched the bitten apple away from him. She took a bite, swallowed and a moment later when she concluded that it was indeed not poisoned, she handed it to Alisa.

Such a kind witch, Eren thought. She would have made a good wife—if it wasn’t for her magic.

“I have nothing against you,” Eren repeated.

“Then open these doors and let me go.”

“Hah,” he chuckled. “I have nothing against you, but I can’t let you go.”

“Why not?”

“Why do you think I am here in King’s Pride?” Eren said. “It is because I have nowhere else to go. Years ago, witches have destroyed my village...killed my friends and family...”

He watched her carefully. She averted her gaze. There was a sliver of guilt in her eyes. She knew that he was telling the truth.

Eren continued. “But together with my brother, I was able to escape.”

“You have a brother?”

Eren suppressed a smile. Yes, this was going well. Very well. He had managed to engage her in a regular conversation. As long as he chose his words well, in a moment of careless trust, she could reveal something crucial to him.

“Yes, I have a little brother. His name is Kolin. We survived the attack of the witches and have come to King’s Pride to make a new life.”

There was one question he simply had to ask. A question that had been on his mind for years. “Why do witches attack human villages? What have we ever done to you?”

At first, Sable gave him a blank stare—as though she had no idea what he was talking about. Then a glimmer of apology flashed in her eyes, a moment of guilt. She sighed, as though she was regretting something, and then she shrugged.

“Not all witches are the same,” she said. “There are some witches who attack human villages. There are witches who live among humans and even take human men for lovers...and there are some witches who live in isolation, deep in the eternal forests where no man has ever set foot.”

“And what kind of witch are you?”

“Open these doors and you will find out.”

Eren smiled slightly. A good answer.

Sable too smiled. It was an amusing conversation.

“Do you have siblings?” Eren asked. “Someone like Kolin?”

His heart hammered in his ears. He wondered if Sable could hear it. He swallowed. How she responded to this question could reveal how successful he had been in creating an atmosphere of trust.

“Yes, I have a sister. Her name is Claire.”

Eren breathed out deeply, silently. Only one more step.

“And where is she? In the Eisen Kingdom?”

Sable opened her mouth to answer. Eren could hardly suppress his smile. If he found out the location of someone this witch loved, then he knew why Sable would want to break out. And once he had that information, he could crush her will.

Alisa stopped her. She pulled Sable away. Eren saw her expression; it was full of terrible awareness. She had figured out his intentions. He cursed her silently.

“Come back when you have more apples,” said Alisa.

Eren stood, his hand on the hilt of his sword. He was ready to draw it. He wanted to kill her. He was just one step away—and this damned witch interrupted.

But before he could draw his sword, a guard appeared. He saluted. Eren acknowledged him with a nod.

The guard said: “Commanding Officer Reinhard wants to see you.”

“What is it?”

“He says there a visitor wants to meet you. A woman.”
