The Girl in Cell 3 (Triple Witching Hour)

Every day SABLE talks to her knight in shining armor, EREN. She says sweet words, tugging at his heart, hoping to steal it. But there is always a barrier between them - a prison cell door. EREN has struck a deal: keep her locked up and his little brother will be out of harms way.

Her cell is inescapable and her placement on death row rises fast. She aims to seduce him and have him break her out. But when truths and lies become one, can she deceive his heart without breaking her own?

19. Chapter 18 - Sable

“What are you two talking about?”

Sable didn’t answer. Neither did Alisa. They couldn’t possibly let him know the truth—it would mean execution for both of them.

But Senior Officer Galloway did not seem to leave. Sable’s heart pounded wildly against her chest. So long as he was here, they could not discuss any breakout plans. But if she did not give him an answer right now, then he might grow even more suspicious.

She exchanged glances with Alisa. Uncertainty was the only thing she saw in her friend. Sable decided to engage. Better to answer with nonsense than with suspicious silence.

“We were just talking about the weather.”

“The weather?” Eren laughed softly. “And tell me, what is the weather like today?”

“It has been night for quite some time.”

Eren chuckled. He put down his bag of apples, took one out and began to eat it. Sable’s eyes widened slightly, her mouth watering immediately. Ever since Alisa had regained her health, the fruits and fresh meat had stopped coming; they were back to eating whatever the other witches were served. This devilish scent invaded her cell, the sweetness of its juices piercing her mind. Her eyes were fixated on the red goodness in his hands.

“Since we will be seeing quite a lot of each other, tell me...” Eren said and paused for a moment, “what is your name?”

Sable contemplated his words in silence for a moment. Since the day when she was paired up with Alisa, she had not seen much of Officer Galloway. In fact, she had seen more of the other guards than she had seen of him. What did he mean when he said that they would be seeing a lot of each other? She asked him.

“I will be your private guard from now on.” His eyes glittered with sardonic amusement.

Sable’s heart sank. This man who clearly had a vendetta against witches—now her private guard. She glanced back at Alisa. Her face was a blank. Clearly, despite all of her scheming, this development had not entered her calculations. It was almost certain that Officer Galloway would watch them with greater care than the other guards. He would not let them out of his sight. And if he was constantly present, then they could not discuss their breakout plans—at least until after he went home. But when would that be? They could only wait.

“You still haven’t told me your name,” Eren said.

She took a breath. “Sable.”

“Just Sable. We witches have no surnames.”

“You lie. There are witches with surnames.”

Sable shook her head. “Not real surnames. Witches that belong to a certain clan may adopt the clan name as a surname, but I don’t belong to any clan.”

“Hmm, so you are a lone witch, ey?”

Sable shrugged. “There are plenty of lone witches.”

“And what was a lone witch doing when she was captured by King’s Pride?”

Sable did not answer. Revealing more would be to reveal her secrets. A past that she did not want to think about. Not now. Not in this place.

Eren continued. “My records say that you have been captured in the Eisen Kingdom...near Bovenbridge. What were you doing in enemy territory?”

Sable narrowed her eyes. Was he trying to accuse her of conspiring with the enemy? Is that why she was behind bar? No, that didn’t make sense. Witches didn’t take sides in the conflict of humans. This civil war had nothing do to with her kind.

They will kill us! We have to break out! They will rip our magic out!

“Tell me Sable, what were you doing in enemy territory?” Eren repeated, caressing her name with playful malice.

Sable swallowed. She could not answer this question. Her eyes darted left and right, desperate for a way out—but all she was walls.

She had quite a bit of experience handling human men. She knew how to talk to them in the taverns and she knew how to tumble with them on a bed. She enjoyed their company and was aware of their desires. She could stroke his pride when needed. And when she wanted to, she could control a man in deep conversation, touching upon his deepest fears and hopes and dreams.

But this situation was different. She was behind bars and Officer Galloway held two things that she desperately wanted: an apple and the keys to freedom.

She could not gain freedom just yet, but she could try to attain the former.

First gain a little control in this unbalanced power dynamic, Sable thought.

“A gentleman should tell a lady his name.”

She saw Eren raise a startled eyebrow. Then it turned into a smile full of amused contempt.

“My name is Eren Galloway. Ranked at Senior Officer.”

Now for the apple.
