The Girl in Cell 3 (Triple Witching Hour)

Every day SABLE talks to her knight in shining armor, EREN. She says sweet words, tugging at his heart, hoping to steal it. But there is always a barrier between them - a prison cell door. EREN has struck a deal: keep her locked up and his little brother will be out of harms way.

Her cell is inescapable and her placement on death row rises fast. She aims to seduce him and have him break her out. But when truths and lies become one, can she deceive his heart without breaking her own?

16. Chapter 15 - Eren

Eren slept through most of the day and woke up in the late afternoon. He found the hut quiet and empty. At first he thought that Kolin might have gone out to work—perhaps the boy was feeling better already—but he found his little brother lying sick in bed.

“Are you feeling any better?” Eren asked.

Kolin opened his eyes. His gaze was hazy and unfocused. “Water,” he croaked.

Eren rushed out and drew water from the well. Thankfully, no one was there; most good folk were still working in the fields or in the city. They would not return until sundown.

“Should I find a doctor?” Eren asked as he fed Kolin the water.

Even though his face was gaunt, the horror in Kolin’s expression was clear. “No! A doctor is so expensive.”

“Kolin, we can afford to— “

“Just give me a few more days,” Kolin said. “I’ve been sick before, I know can get better again.”

Eren wanted to object, but then decided to only nod when he saw the determined gleam of frugality in the boy’s eyes.

“Have you been reassigned?” Kolin asked. He pushed the wooden cup away and rested his head on the straw pillow.

“What makes you think that?”

“These days you always go to work at night rather than during the day.”

Eren did not answer. He didn’t know what to say; he trusted Kolin more than any other person in the world, but he also remembered that Reinhard had told him that the imprisoned witches were a secret. If the general population of King’s Pride found out that were witches kept underground…

“Officer Reinhard has given me a special assignment.”

“What special assignment?”

“I’m in charge of guarding some bad people.”

Kolin sat up despite his dizziness and his brows furrowed with contemplation. “Are you guarding witches?”

Eren laughed and shook his head. “I can neither confirm nor deny that.” He winked. Kolin too laughed. They were as thick as thieves.

But when their laughter faded, only bitter memories remained. The cheerful atmosphere in the hut changed; both brothers could sense what the other was thinking, remembering and feeling.

“Do you remember mother and father?” Kolin asked.

Eren said nothing.

“Sometimes I have trouble remembering their faces...their voices.”

Eren closed his eyes and tried to recall the warm presence of his late parents. He knew what Kolin meant; with every passing day, week and month, the clearness of the memory of mother and father became more hazy, less defined. He couldn’t remember their eye color. Then he forgot their gait. Then even their noses, lips and voice were obscured. Now he only remembered a feeling—a warm embrace of unconditional love.

“Don’t worry about it,” Eren said. “Don’t worry.”

He sat on the bed with his back turned to Kolin. He could hear his silent tears. With a gentle smile, he turned and ruffle the boy’s hair.

“Don’t worry,” he repeated. “I’ll make sure that the witches are punished for what they’ve done to our parents.”

“But there are so many of them.”

“Hmm, that is true,” Eren said. “But this is a secret. Can you keep a secret?”

Kolin nodded.

“Officer Reinhard and his superiors are capturing more witches.”

Kolin’s eyes gleamed with surprise.

Outside, the farm hands came back from the fields. A merchant closed his stall and looked forward to seeing the barmaid at the local tavern, hoping that he might win her affection. The sun vanished beneath the horizon. Darkness descended. The witches underground were entirely removed from this cycle.

Eren smiled with reassurance. “I will make sure the witches are punished.”

It was time to go to work.
