3. 3

Steam billowed around me as I relaxed in the hot water. It felt so nice to be wrapped in this warmth of the water and to be clean. The heat nulled my chills but I still felt the presence of the fever. Despite knowing that food will be waiting for me soon I felt my eyes grow heavy with exaughstion.

Just as I was about to let sleep take me over a knock as the door startled me. "I'm coming in." Tear's voice came through the door and it opened. "I am putting supper on now so it will be a few minutes." He told me while laying a pair of clothes and a towel on the floor for me.

I nodded and waited until he left to relax once again. Once satisfied with being cleaned and warm I got out. The clothes were a little big on me but they were comfortable and clean. Bare feet padding against the wooden floor I went into the living room. Tear must have cleaned up a little bit while I was bathing since the books that was on the table and couch was now on the floor piled up.

A bowl of soup was waiting for me on the table and Tear was sitting there eating his own. It smelled delicious and made my stomach growl with anticipation. "Come eat. The soup shouldn't hurt your stomach to much." He ordered, gesturing beside him.

Hesitantly I sat beside him and took a spoonful of the soup. It was delicious and made my stomach feel like it was in heaven. "This is amazing." I meant every word of the compliment and continued eating. A comfortable silence settled over us as we ate until the both of us finished. Once again sleep tried to take over me and without regard I closed my eyes, powerless to fight against the temptation.

Flames licked my skin, the heat so intense and painful. Screams mixed together as children desperately tried to escape the burning room. I pounded on the locked door before a strong hand pulled me away. Fearful  I turned around coming face to face with a child. His soft blue eyes now held determination and worry with his hair a state from being abruptly woken up. "We need to jump from the window. Hurry!" He pulled me to the window and broke it.

Blood rose up onto the child's hand but he showed no pain. "We can't! We are too high, we'll die if we try." I cried out. The child hesitated for a split second but put his arms around me, encasing me in a protective hold.

"Don't worry, I'll protect you. I will always protect you." He whispered in my ear. My body followed his and I felt the late winter wind hit my burning skin. Scared I burrowed my head closer into him. "I have something to tell you. I was sent here but I had a name before. It's Mikale, please remember that. No matter what, remember me."

That sounded like- I couldn't finish that thought since air lashed against us as we fell from the broken window to the grass below. A scream escaped me as Mikale clutched onto my body, making sure he was underneath me. Before I could process what was happening we hit the ground, air escaped me as I landed on Mikale, his body cushioning my fall.

Forcfully I tumbled around and stopped, surprised that I was still alive. I was safe and free from the locked room. Smiling I looked for Mikale, the darkness making it hard to see. Light from the flames above barely illuminated the ground but it was enough for me to see a nightmare.

Mikale laid on the ground not moving. "Mikale?" I called out, hoping that he was only passed out. Heart pounding I crawled closer to him. As I neared I felt the blood seeping around him, his neck and limbs at doll like angles. "Mikale?"

Tears streamed down my soot covered face and I reach his body. His skin was still warm but no heart beat thrummed against me, his chest not rising or falling. "Mikale."

 No. "Mikale..."

 This wasn't right. "Mikale!"

He wasn't dead. He couldn't be dead. "Mikale!"

My heart felt like it was being ripped out of my chest, being torn to little pieces. I screamed in lost, in sorrow, in anger. Why? Why did he had to jump? Why would he sacrafice himself for me? My screams became louder as I clutched onto his broken body.

"Wake up! Wake up, Mikale! You can't die! You can't! You promised me that you will always protect me, that means forever. We have forever left. Don't die!" Sobs broke from my body as I touched my forehead against his, wishing that he would wake up. That he survived the fall. That his life didn't end here.

The screams above died down and I was the only one left. The only one who could mourn. Who could cry. Time seemed to stop as I held onto Mikale. I didn't realize people were around me until someone touch my shoulder. Scared I looked up into a face of a man.

"Sorry." He said and pointed a gun at me. Fear raced through me and everything went black as the boom of air exploded from the gun.

Clutching my chest I bolted up from a laying postition. Darkness surrounded me but my eyes quickly adjusted. I was in a room that had a bed, a dresser, and a chair. Breathing heavily I realized that it was only a dream. That I was just dreaming.

My face was wet from crying and sweat. "You have been having nightmares since you fell asleep. It's been almost two days, I was worried you wouldn't recover from the fever." A voice startled me. I looked at the chair and noticed Tear watching me.

"What?" Confusion and reminants of sleep clouded my mind. Where was I? Look around better I realized that I must be in Tear's bedroom. How did I get here? Last I remembered I was falling asleep on the couch after eating soup with him.

Sitting up straight I looked back to Tear. "You kept talking about someone named Mikale, like before in the factory. Who is that?" He asked me. Tears pricked my eyes and I looked away from him. Mikale was not someone who I wanted others to know. What happened that night and afterwards... It was something that I will never talking about, something that I will never forget no matter how much I tried.

My silence was my answer and Tear realized that I wasn't going to tell him. Sighing he stood up and headed to the door. "The others know that I took you in. They want to meet you soon so get ready and I will make us lunch. Clothes and a towel is in the bathroom." He told me and looked back at me before leaving the room. "By the way, be ready to pay me back. If they decide to keep you, you will work for us. If not you will go back out into the streets."
