NOBODY’S CHILD

"Nobody's Child" Cassie is an eleven year old girl who has been in a children's home since she was four years old. Very bright, Cassie excels in most subjects and can play Brahms and Mozart on the piano at the age of only six. Because of her age nobody wants to adopt her. Mrs Cummings the manager of Auton House is a wicked woman who treats Cassie and the rest in her charge badly and beats her with regularity. One day she is sent to clean out the toilet and bathroom and Mrs Cummings comes along to inspect them. Running a white glove over everything and looking for dirt. When she doesn't find any she then reaches up on the door - Cassie is only three feet six inches tall and was unable to reach up to the top of the door and Mrs Cummings sets about her with a cane. She beats her so badly that Cassie runs at her forcing her back where she hits her head on a wash basin. Cassie in her panic rushes out and runs away.- It is there that she meets Don a ex docker who takes pity on the girl - rea

The call came into the station and Tim Stanton picked up the phone.

“Hello sir, we have a young girl at the hospital here she is around eleven years of age.’ “She was found in a derelict house on the bottom of Clive Street. She’s in a bad way I’m afraid.’

“Has she been attacked?’

No,

“Is she conscious?’

“No sir she’s in a coma.’

“What’s happened to her?’

“She’s got Weil’s Syndrome contracted from rats I believe.’

“The poor little bugger, “Thanks for letting me know Mick.’

“Beefy get your coat we have to make a call.’

The two men left the Station and headed up to Wallsend. “I don’t think Mr Delap is going to be very pleased when we tell him what’s happened but I think he has a right to know anyway.’

They drove up the bottom road through Howdon Road then through East Howdon

When they reached Don’s house it was eleven forty five.

They knock on the door and waited for an answer. The dog was barking and Don was telling it to be quiet as he answered.

“Hello Mr Delap we’ve come about Cassie.’

“I’ve already told you lot; I’ve never seen her for weeks.’

“We’ve found her Mr Delap.’

“Where is she?’

“She’s in Preston Hospital in a bad way so don’t argue with us just go and get your coat we will run you down there.’

Don was on his toes as he grabbed his coat and hat and left the dog in the house. He jumped into the back of the car and Tim and Beefy quickly followed.

“What’s happened to her?

“She hasn’t been attacked but she has a serious condition picked up from rats called Weils Syndrome.’

“Is she going to be alright?’

“I don’t know we’ve just found out ourselves. I guess you’ve been reading in the papers about Martha Cummings.’

“Yes, I read it; when is she up in court?’

“Next week I believe.’

“I hope that they lock her up and throw away the key.’

“She will certainly never work with children again said Beefy.’

“What about the others?’

“They will receive custodial sentences I expect.’

“Beats me how she got away with it for so long; those poor kids must have gone through absolute living hell there.

Many of the former children from Auton House who are now grown up have now come forward Mr Delap; Martha Cummings is looking at a very long sentence indeed.

Beefy turned off past the Percy Main Club and then onto Wallsend Road.

“Have you put your name down to adopt this child?’
