Willie gave the address then hung up he then sprinted all the way back to where his friend was.

He asked if she was alive when he got there.’

“She’s breathing but very shallow.’

“Where the hell is that bloody ambulance?’

John Patterson Picked up the girl in his arms and Willie held the fence open until he had got through then he slid through himself.

They could hear the serene of the ambulance now as it got ever nearer to them. All the while both John and Willie were talking to the child trying to keep her from falling into a coma.’

When the ambulance arrived they lifted her straight into the ambulance and gave her oxygen. She was barely alive. The two men explained where they had found her and the police were then summoned to Preston Hospital. Look you are going to have to come with us to the hospital the police will want details from you.’

“Yes on course said the men?’

The ambulance driver tapped on the window telling his mate to put his foot down. The ambulance was going as fast as it could until it reach the emergency department. They had radioed the hospital and a doctor was waiting on hand to treat the girl on arrival.

Once the ambulance had stopped the Ambulance driver opened the back doors and John and Willie jumped out and let the two ambulance men pulled out the stretcher and they wheeled it into the hospital. They raced down the corridor and into the emergency room. Doctor Ralph Mason and a nurse cut away the clothing that the girl was wearing then removed her shoes. Look both ankles and feet are swollen. He sounded her chest then checked her eye lids.

Can we get a saline drip and a canola immediately? I will need bloods taken. “What do you suspect doctor.’ asked Sister Brenda Main who had been at the hospital since it was opened as a student nurse.

“Leprospirosis; if my calculations are correct she will need a full blood transfusion or we are looking at organ failure, cardiovascular collapse, and then death.’

Cassie had now slipped into a coma and the doctors and nurses fought to save her life.’

The police arrived and the two men from the shipyard gave their account of how they found the young girl.’

It’s a bloody good job that you two found her when you did or we would have had a fatality on our hands.

“Is she going to be alright?’

“She’s in a coma, but she’s a tough little lass, I’m sure she will pull through.’

“We hope so too; you will let us know wont you officer. We have to get back to work now.’

“Look lads order yourselves a taxi and tell them to send the bill to the station. Thanks you’re bloody heroes the two of you.’

“Tell that to Jackie Adder our gaffer will you.’

“Jackie, I know no one better. I went to school with the bugger.’ Don’t worry after this gets out the two of you will get medals.

“We just did what anyone else would have done.’

“Aye, but it was you two who did it he winked as the two men left the waiting room and went to phone a taxi.
