"Nobody's Child" Cassie is an eleven year old girl who has been in a children's home since she was four years old. Very bright, Cassie excels in most subjects and can play Brahms and Mozart on the piano at the age of only six. Because of her age nobody wants to adopt her. Mrs Cummings the manager of Auton House is a wicked woman who treats Cassie and the rest in her charge badly and beats her with regularity. One day she is sent to clean out the toilet and bathroom and Mrs Cummings comes along to inspect them. Running a white glove over everything and looking for dirt. When she doesn't find any she then reaches up on the door - Cassie is only three feet six inches tall and was unable to reach up to the top of the door and Mrs Cummings sets about her with a cane. She beats her so badly that Cassie runs at her forcing her back where she hits her head on a wash basin. “I guess it is.’

“Then the answer is yes.’

“Don kissed her again then said all we have to do is find Cassie now and I will be the happiest man in the whole world.’

Cassie lay unmoving in the derelict house; the fire had gone out and she was too weak to get up and relight it. She had come down with a fever after drinking the last of the lemonade. What she didn’t know was the rats had been at the bottle and had drunk from a plastic cup that she had used to collect rain water from. It started about four days before that when she began to burn up and she thought that she had picked up a cold. She bought paracetamol from Boots the Chemists in an effort to rid herself of the cold that she thought she had. Then her chest started heaving and her throat was dry. By the third day she was coughing very badly and her breathing started to labour her ankles and feet had swelled up so much she was unable to walk and she had severe cramps in her lower back.

On the fourth day she tried to get up but couldn’t stand. She was violently sick and vomited in the corner where she lay. Then she lost consciousness.

She hoped that someone would find her soon before it was too late.

On the Saturday evening she heard noises her voice was dry and croaked but she managed to shout for help.’

“What was that said John Patterson as he stood urinating against a bush after coming out of the pub and getting caught short?’

“I never heard nowt Willie Telford replied.’

“Shut up a minute will you and listen; there did you hear it.’

Aye I did that time; where’s it coming from?’

“It sounded like from over there in that old house.’ “Come on lets take a look.’

“What aboot Jackie Adder if he finds oot we’ve been to the pub we’ll get the bloody sack.’

“Sod him come on.’

The two men walked over the waste ground looking out for the pot holes that if anyone got careless they would fall straight down into the river below.

“There its getting louder said John,’

“It sounds like a young bairn; its coming from that house Willie; God I hope someone isn’t hurt; it’s a bloody death trap in there.

“Get your torch oot; I cannot see a thing here said Willie.’

John took out his flashlight that they used to navigate back to the yard in the darkness. He shone the beam as they moved an old door from the window and shone the light inside.’

“Where are you shouted John as he scanned the building with his torch light.

“I’m in here came a feint voice, help me.’

John climbed through the window and walked through the rooms then he shone the torch and there in the corner he saw something on the ground. He ran over and saw the child.

“Oh God; Willie he screamed Get a bloody ambulance and quick; it a bairn alright she looks as if she stopped breathing. Hurry up man.’ Willie made his way across the waste ground then pulled the fence open and slid out. He sprinted all the way to the top of Coach Lane where he knew there was a phone. He picked up the receiver panting for breath and dialled 999.

“Hello what service do you require?’

Ambulance quick there a young bairn in a derelict house and she’s not breathing.
