"Nobody's Child" Cassie is an eleven year old girl who has been in a children's home since she was four years old. Very bright, Cassie excels in most subjects and can play Brahms and Mozart on the piano at the age of only six. Because of her age nobody wants to adopt her. Mrs Cummings the manager of Auton House is a wicked woman who treats Cassie and the rest in her charge badly and beats her with regularity. One day she is sent to clean out the toilet and bathroom and Mrs Cummings comes along to inspect them. Running a white glove over everything and looking for dirt. When she doesn't find any she then reaches up on the door - Cassie is only three feet six inches tall and was unable to reach up to the top of the door and Mrs Cummings sets about her with a cane. She beats her so badly that Cassie runs at her forcing her back where she hits her head on a wash basin. “Can I have some too said another boy?’

Tim was nearly brought to tears as the children all in rags held out their bowls.’

He opened the boxes of cereal and poured out as many as he could then pour some milk and sugar on them.

“You can all talk freely said Tim there is no need for silence anymore.

“All the children gave a big cheer as they sat and talked amongst themselves; something that they had been deprived of; some of them for years.’

The scars of abuse would live with some for the rest of their lives Tim was glad that he had liberated these children. Sadly he wondered how many others were psychologically affected from their time here at Auton House. Then he thought of Cassie Mitchell; no wonder she had fled. God knows what ordeals she had suffered at the hands of that wicked woman.

Within an hour a police team came in and searched the building the press came and took photos of the rooms and the conditions these children were living in.

It wasn’t long before Auton House was close down by the authorities.

The Evening Chronicle ran a four page spread explaining everything about the home. The people involved with running the home were pictured and would appear in court.

There was a single photograph of Martha Cummings labelled “The Demon” of Auton House. It was discovered that she had embezzled thousands of pounds over a twenty year period. The money had been placed into several bank accounts all ready for her to spend in her retirement.

Don returned home from walking the dog and Linda was waiting for him outside.’

It had been over three weeks since he had seen her.

“Hello Don,’ have you got the kettle on; I have some good news to tell you.’

Don opened the door and asked Linda to come in. “have you seen Cassie?’

No but look at this, Linda showed Don the paper about Auton House.

Don sat reading the paper as Linda made them a cup of coffee.’

“Don’t you see Don; this means that Cassie can come home now?’

“Do you know where she is?’

“Don shook his head, the last I heard from her was when I came home after being arrested. God knows where she is now he shrugged his shoulders. “I’m worried to death Linda that someone has taken her and harmed her.’ “I’ve rode my bike every night over to the Jarrow Slacks hoping that she would return there. I’ve asked in the café and in the library in the forum but no one have seen neither hide nor hare of her.

“Don’t worry Don, said Linda as she took his hand and squeezed it she will be back soon.’

“I’m sure that the social services will let you adopt Cassie now.’

“I don’t think so Linda I’m a single man living alone who is going to allow me to look after an eleven year old girl?’

“You don’t have to be on your own you know Don; I am here.’

“What do you mean?’

“Well what I am trying to say is, I like you a lot Don, and you are a kind gentle caring man. Who wouldn’t want you?’

“I was hoping that you would like me Linda because I like you too and I think we could make a nice family together if you will have me.’

Linda leaned across and kissed Don softly on the lips and he took her in his arms. They held each other for what seemed like an eternity. Then he looked at her and said do you think you cold marry a man like me.’

“Is that a proposal Dan Delap?’
