NOBODY’S CHILD

"Nobody's Child" Cassie is an eleven year old girl who has been in a children's home since she was four years old. Very bright, Cassie excels in most subjects and can play Brahms and Mozart on the piano at the age of only six. Because of her age nobody wants to adopt her. Mrs Cummings the manager of Auton House is a wicked woman who treats Cassie and the rest in her charge badly and beats her with regularity. One day she is sent to clean out the toilet and bathroom and Mrs Cummings comes along to inspect them. Running a white glove over everything and looking for dirt. When she doesn't find any she then reaches up on the door - Cassie is only three feet six inches tall and was unable to reach up to the top of the door and Mrs Cummings sets about her with a cane. She beats her so badly that Cassie runs at her forcing her back where she hits her head on a wash basin. Cassie in her panic rushes out and runs away.- It is there that she meets Don a ex docker who takes pity on the girl - rea

“Covering your tracks were you Mrs Cummings. You must have been burning the midnight oil last night.’

You see Mrs Cummings our forensic team are very good and they can tell the age of ink over a period of time. “That is a lovely word isn’t it “Time”

“You are going to be serving a lot of it soon.’

“You have no proof.’

“We will find evidence I assure you.’

“What bank did you say you are with?’

“I cannot remember.’

“We will check them all anyway and I’m sure we will find your name on quite a few accounts.’

“Yes; no doubt you will as the benefactors left me to take charge of the money you see.’

“I think the biggest benefactor was indeed you.’

“Me,’ how utterly preposterous.’

Beefy came back with the cook and Mrs Brewis and Tim asked them to sit down.

“Mrs Cummings here has been telling me how you two have been stealing money that was meant to be used for the benefit of the children. You both are implicated and you are going to go to prison for a long time.’

“It wasn’t us sir it were her, she made us do it.

“Shut up you fools shouted Mrs Cummings through gritted teeth.’ “you will get us all hung with your tongues.’

Unfortunately we don’t hang people these days or you would all be swinging on the end of a rope. Mrs Martha Cummings, Edith Brewis, and Mavis Johnson you are all under arrest for the cruelty of children in your care and the embezzlement of funds.

You do not have to say anything, but if you do say anything it will be used against you in court; “do you understand.’

“It was her two women blurted out she has all the money. She made us burn the ledgers last night on the fire.’

Shut up, shut up you bloody imbeciles.

Tim picked up the phone and rang Patricia Holgate from Social Services.

“Hello Patricia, its Detective Sergeant Tim Stanton here; Yes I’m fine, could you please send a team to Auton house immediately to look after some children. We will need to use your skills to interview each of them in due course.’

“Thank you, I will see you soon.’

Tim made another call to the station then put down the phone.

“Handcuff this lot would you Beefy and put them in the hurry up wagon when it arrives.

“My pleasure sir,’

Tim went to the rooms to find that all the bedding had been taken away and all there were on the beds was one grey blanket each and a pillow with no pillow cases.’

Going into the dining hall the sixteen children sat at the tables in silence just staring.

They looked all in shock.

Tim went into the kitchen where there was an abundance of food. He took out several boxes of cereal milk and sugar then came into the hall.

“Right who’s for some proper breakfast?’ bring you r bowls over and you can choose what you like.’

Can I have some rice crispies please said a little girl of about three.’

Yes, would you like some?’

“Yes please she said in a very quiet voice.’
