"Nobody's Child" Cassie is an eleven year old girl who has been in a children's home since she was four years old. Very bright, Cassie excels in most subjects and can play Brahms and Mozart on the piano at the age of only six. Because of her age nobody wants to adopt her. Mrs Cummings the manager of Auton House is a wicked woman who treats Cassie and the rest in her charge badly and beats her with regularity. One day she is sent to clean out the toilet and bathroom and Mrs Cummings comes along to inspect them. Running a white glove over everything and looking for dirt. When she doesn't find any she then reaches up on the door - Cassie is only three feet six inches tall and was unable to reach up to the top of the door and Mrs Cummings sets about her with a cane. She beats her so badly that Cassie runs at her forcing her back where she hits her head on a wash basin. Cassie in her panic rushes out and runs away.- It is there that she meets Don a ex docker who takes pity on the girl - rea

That is quite a distance for her to take you by surprise don’t you think?’

“Well my reactions aren’t as quick as they used to be.’

“Maybe the girl was just trying to get away from you and you stopped her.’

“It’s possible Mrs Cummings.’

It was then that Tim saw the evil in her eyes as they narrowed and was about to lose her temper with Beefy who had really hit a raw nerve.

I’ve told you and I told the police at the time she attacked me. It was assault.’

“Some people attack out of defence Mrs Cummings. It’s known as fight or flight syndrome.’

“Really Mr Woodford well this girl came looking for a fight alright.’

“And you dealt with her did you.’

“No I did not; look here Mr Woodford I am the victim here not the perpetrator of this violent act. Are you trying to insinuate otherwise?’

“All I’m saying that anyone who is mistreated long enough can snap and retaliate.’

“Mrs Cummings composed herself and said we do not mistreat any of the children here.’

“Did you know that Cassie Delap is a savant?

“Delap,’ her name is Cassie Mitchell; get your facts right detective.’ What is a savant anyway; is that some infectious disease because if it is then she has a severe dose of it.

“No Mrs Cummings it is someone who has the ability to remember the smallest of details. She can also read a whole book in seconds and recite it word for word.’

“Yes she was always too clever for her own good that one.’

“Shall we go to lunch?’

The children were all brought in and they were all wearing new clothes and polished shoes. They marched like soldiers in single file and stood behind the wooden chairs until they were given an order to sit by Mrs Brewis. There wasn’t a peep out of any of them as they waited to be served; no one touched the food until Mrs Cumming read Grace. “For what we are about to receive may the Lord make us truly grateful Amen.’

“Amen said everyone then the children went at the food as if they had never been fed.

“Hungry lot aren’t they Mrs Cummings said Tim.’

“Yes they burn up a lot of energy in the school playground.’

“This is first class Mrs Cummings.’

“We buy only the best cuts of meat here Mr Woodford.’

“You must have a good budget then Mrs Cummings?’

“We get a lot of generous benefactors who donate.’

“Really, I would like to see the accounts if I may.’

“Not today Detective Stanton we are extremely busy.’ Maybe we can make another appointment.

“If you wish after the dinner the desert was put out and again the children couldn’t get it down fast enough. When they were all finished Mrs Brewis ushered them all outside into the playground.’

“Right then said Tim I think we will be on our way. There was a bowl of fresh fruit on the table and Tim said may I?’

Help yourself said Mrs Cummings as Tim picked up a Granny Smith apple from the bowl. He rubbed it on his trouser leg then turned towards Mrs Cummings and threw it from about the same distance as where Cassie was meant to charge she was surprisingly quick and caught the apple with one hand.’

“Your reactions aren’t as slow as you think are they Mrs Cummings?’

Tim led Beefy outside after thanking her for lunch.
