"Nobody's Child" Cassie is an eleven year old girl who has been in a children's home since she was four years old. Very bright, Cassie excels in most subjects and can play Brahms and Mozart on the piano at the age of only six. Because of her age nobody wants to adopt her. Mrs Cummings the manager of Auton House is a wicked woman who treats Cassie and the rest in her charge badly and beats her with regularity. One day she is sent to clean out the toilet and bathroom and Mrs Cummings comes along to inspect them. Running a white glove over everything and looking for dirt. When she doesn't find any she then reaches up on the door - Cassie is only three feet six inches tall and was unable to reach up to the top of the door and Mrs Cummings sets about her with a cane. She beats her so badly that Cassie runs at her forcing her back where she hits her head on a wash basin. Cassie in her panic rushes out and runs away.- It is there that she meets Don a ex docker who takes pity on the girl - rea

Come with us said Tim as his cell door was opened and he was led to an interview room.

Tim offered Don a cigarette which he refused.

Then they offered him a cup of coffee which he accepted.

Tim sat in the chair in front of him this time and he spoke with a soft calm voice.

He asked just routine questions, like where he worked and how long he’d worked there; also where he liked to drink and if he was a football supporter.

“Look detective I know how this works; you know, good cop bad cop.’

I’m not stupid; I watch plenty of police programmes like Dixon of Dock Green; Z Cars, and Callan so give me my phone call.’

“Alright we will let you make your call but we will need a statement from you once your brief arrives.’

“Will my brief be there when I make the statement otherwise you can forget it?’

“Yes we will allow that.’

A phone was brought and he asked for the card with the number of his solicitor on it

Beefy brought the card to him and he rung the number.

Don had no idea of the time whilst he was incarcerated until he glanced at Beefy’s watch as he put down a cup of coffee. It was ten past one in the morning. Harry Harrison was awoken from his bed and he reached over to answer the call.

Hello, Mr Harrison this is Don Delap here; I’m down at the station in North Shields.

“Give me an hour Don, I will be with you as soon as I can; remember not a word until I get there.’

Thank you Mr Harrison.’ Bye. Don hung up then handed the phone back to Tim Stanton. He sipped on the hot coffee and he felt better knowing someone was going to come and get him out of this place.

Cassie ran down to the tunnel and never stopped until she reached the moving staircase the sound of the chains that turned the belt on the wooden stairs reverberated from below it was a slow process getting to the top. Once she had reached it Cassie made her way down to the Slacks; the familiar sounds from the seagulls and cormorants filled the air as the darkness crept in She worked her way up to her camp and it was still intact she climbed inside it then placed her bag with her clean underwear inside down and she used it as a pillow. This time she had brought a heavy blanket from her bed and she covered herself with it and closed her eyes. She knew it would be a long night ahead and the police would be looking for her so she grabbed a few hours. As luck would have it by seven o’clock the two fishermen that she’d see the last time that she’d slept here were back. Cassie hoped that they had brought a lot of food with them.’

She sat watching them as they made ready and casted out into the depths.

“Pound for the first fish and a pound for the heaviest one said Tom.’

I hate to take your money off you but it’s a bet said Bob.’ The red and green tip lights shone in the night sky as the two men lit the lights on their heads as well as a Tilley lamp so they could see what they were doing.

Fancy a trip to the Norwegian Fjords in the summer mate John Wilson from the Sea Angler magazine is offering to charter a boat with ten men with fights and accommodation for £100 pounds for three days fishing.’

“That’s a bit steep isn’t it?’
