"Nobody's Child" Cassie is an eleven year old girl who has been in a children's home since she was four years old. Very bright, Cassie excels in most subjects and can play Brahms and Mozart on the piano at the age of only six. Because of her age nobody wants to adopt her. Mrs Cummings the manager of Auton House is a wicked woman who treats Cassie and the rest in her charge badly and beats her with regularity. One day she is sent to clean out the toilet and bathroom and Mrs Cummings comes along to inspect them. Running a white glove over everything and looking for dirt. When she doesn't find any she then reaches up on the door - Cassie is only three feet six inches tall and was unable to reach up to the top of the door and Mrs Cummings sets about her with a cane. She beats her so badly that Cassie runs at her forcing her back where she hits her head on a wash basin. Cassie in her panic rushes out and runs away.- It is there that she meets Don a ex docker who takes pity on the girl - rea

They chatted away for several minutes before the head asked her if she remembered the things that she’d been asked to keep in her mind.

Most people would remember about six of the items but none of the numbers.

Cassie remembered every one and in sequence. Even the book and the page number and that were in less than a second after Mrs Pratchet had closed the book shut.

“Would you like me to recite everything on the page Cassie asked?

“No, that will not be necessary.’

“You have a special gift Cassie; you are what we call a savant; that is someone who has an exceptional memory capacity.’

“I know I researched it in the library.

“How many books have you read Cassie?’

“Hundreds I guess.’

“Are you able to recite from memory everyone that you have read?’

“That is absolutely amazing.’

The secretary knocked on the door and then told Mrs Pratchet that two people from social services were waiting to speak with her.

“Just wait here a moment Cassie I won’t be very long.’

Dorothy straightened her skirt then opened the door and went out to meet the women.

“Hello,’ I’m Patricia Holgate and this is my colleague Davina Farmer.’ We come about a young girl going under the name of Cassie Delap.’

Yes everyone seems to have an interest in this young girl. She has quite a talent you know.’

“We’ve come to take her back into care where she escaped from over three weeks ago now.’

“On whose authority do you just waltz in here and make demands?’

“Well the police for a start, then there’s my boss Mr Gordon Simm.’

They showed their cards and Dorothy had to concede.’ So you are taking this young girl where may I ask?’

“Well she will be staying at Sea Crest in Whitley Bay until the investigation is over.’

“Would you please enlighten me Miss Holgate?’

“Well allegations of abuse have been placed against Auton House in Newcastle.’

“Yes I’ve heard of the place; it’s that old Victorian building isn’t it.’

“I believe so Mrs Pratchet.’

“That place has never had a good name has it; I hope that they are not sending this young girl back there.’

“It is up to the courts to decide what happens to the girl Mrs Pratchet; we are only doing our jobs.’

“Well do your jobs and find out what the hell is going on at Auton House. A girl doesn’t run away for over 3 weeks for nothing. There has to be a reason for it.’

“That is what we aim to find out.’ said Davina Farmer smugly.’

“Can we take the child now?’

“Yes, she’s in my office I’ll go and fetch her for you.’

Dorothy Pratchet turned on her two inch heeled shoes then walked into her office.

She looked around the room calling for the girl to come out then she noticed that the window was wide open in her room.’

“She’s gone.’

“Gone where; you tell me; the window in my room is wide open.’

The two women then ran down the corridor and out of the building to the car.

Look said Davina two of the tyres have been punctured.
