Very bright, Cassie excels in most subjects and can play Brahms and Mozart on the piano at the age of only six. Because of her age nobody wants to adopt her. That will not do our cause any good at all. There is going to be a lot of media attention; are you prepared for this Mr Delap?’

“I will do what ever it takes to keep Cassie.’

“Good, now I want you to go back home and I will call the police and tell them where the girl is. They will have to take her for a while Mr Delap and she will be questioned and examined by a doctor.’ You will have to go with them to the station. “Do not say anything and what ever you do, do not make a statement until I arrive do you understand?’

“Yes sir.’

“Good, here is my card with my phone number on it as soon as you are down at the station you must ask to make one phone call. I will be with you as soon as I can. “Do not panic or be drawn in by the police questioning. Just give your name and address.

“Yes sir.’

Off you go then; I will ring the police in half an hour that will give you enough time to get home and pack some clothes for the girl.’

He took Fart along to Linda’s and explained everything and asked if she would look after the dog for a while. He told her where his food and basket was after giving her a spare key.

“He then went back along to the house and waited.’

He heard the police siren as it pulled up outside his house and went to the door in his coat and hat.

Here these are her clean clothes and some food for her.’

The other officer took the case and the lunch box as Don was put into the back of the police car. Sylvia Crowe watched from the window of her house as the car sped away down to the station.

Linda saw it too as she stood at the window. She felt sorry for Don who was only trying to give the young girl a home but the law was the law.

It was three thirty when Emily came in crying.’

“They took her mum; they came and took my friend.’

“Who came?’

“The police and the cruelty man they took Cassie away; I will never see her again.’

“Don’t say that love; I’m sure that you will see her again. Linda took her daughter to her breast and hugged her.’

“Come on lets have some tea then you will feel better.’

“I don’t want any tea mum, I want Cassie.’ Emily ran to her room and buried her head in a pillow on the bed and sobbed.’

Linda understood how her daughter felt. She’d never really had a true friend; someone who she could connect with until Cassie came along. “Now she was gone and her daughter would once again feel loneliness. She remembered how her daughter was
