NOBODY’S CHILD

"Nobody's Child" Cassie is an eleven year old girl who has been in a children's home since she was four years old. Very bright, Cassie excels in most subjects and can play Brahms and Mozart on the piano at the age of only six. Because of her age nobody wants to adopt her. Mrs Cummings the manager of Auton House is a wicked woman who treats Cassie and the rest in her charge badly and beats her with regularity. One day she is sent to clean out the toilet and bathroom and Mrs Cummings comes along to inspect them. Running a white glove over everything and looking for dirt. When she doesn't find any she then reaches up on the door - Cassie is only three feet six inches tall and was unable to reach up to the top of the door and Mrs Cummings sets about her with a cane. She beats her so badly that Cassie runs at her forcing her back where she hits her head on a wash basin. Cassie in her panic rushes out and runs away.- It is there that she meets Don a ex docker who takes pity on the girl - rea

Don sat in the room staring up at the walls as he waited.’

“When Valerie returned she gave him the adoption form to fill in and helped him with the difficult questions.’

You have an appointment in fifteen minutes with Harry Harrison; go over there and explain everything to him he will advise you better than I can. Give him your form and he will take care of everything.’

Don got up and shook Valerie’s hand before leaving. He unlocked the thick heavy chain that was holding his bike and placed it inside the box on the back before going down the ramp and walking down the street. He crossed the road then passed a newsagent’s before chaining his bike to a drainpipe outside of Brennan’s Solicitors.

He went to the desk where a young girl was and gave her his name and told her he had an appointment.

“Please take a seat Mr Delap; Mr Harrison has a client and will be with you presently.’

Don sat down and picked up a copy of the Evening Chronicle and began to scan the pages to see if there was anything in there appertaining to Cassie. There wasn’t, so he relaxed a little. It was a good twenty five minutes when an old lady came out of an office then left the building.

Shortly after, a huge looking man came out wearing a grey suit. He was about five feet eleven inches tall he had a bull like neck and rounded features. He weighed about 16 stones and he was as solid as a piece of granite.

He came towards Don and held out a huge hand which swallowed up his as he shook hands. Surprisingly Harry had a soft spoken voice as he held open the door to his office.

“Take a seat young man; Valerie Wallace tells me that you need my help so what can I do for you.’

Don went through the whole story again with the large solicitor who sat back on a large leather chair with his huge hands behind his head.’

“Yes you are in a bit of a fix aren’t you.’ but it’s nothing that we cannot solve.

“Where is the child now?’

“She’s at school; I enrolled her this morning at Stephenson’s Memorial.’

“Now Mr Delap I believe you wish to adopt this child is that right?’

“Can I ask you why when you are a single man?’

“Because this girl has grown attached to me; she trusts me, and she is very clever. She deserves to live in a stable environment. I think sending her back to that home or any other would be a huge mistake; especially when I can give her a home and look after her.’

“How do you feel about this young girl; I’ve heard you talk about what she thinks of you but what about think about her.’

“I don’t want to see her go back to that home Mr Harrison and I will do anything in my power to stop them from taking her away from me.’

“So you clearly care for this girl then.’

“Yes I do.’ I want to be a father to her; something that she has never had before.’

“Do you trust me Mr Delap?’

“Yes I think I can.’

Right then I will take on this case; it won’t cost you a penny; you will be entitled to legal aid I’m sure.’

“Now I am going to call the police to notify them that she is residing at you home because the police will be looking for her and we don’t want to waste police time.
