Very bright, Cassie excels in most subjects and can play Brahms and Mozart on the piano at the age of only six. Because of her age nobody wants to adopt her.  Write in you exercise books how you would survive. Where would you live and what would you eat?’

The class set about writing. Cassie helped Emily with her story who had a natural gift for story telling.

“When the lesson was over the books were handed in and the children dismissed for break. They got their Gill bottle of milk on their way out and Emily bought some Golden Crunch biscuits and shared them with Cassie as they walked around the school yard.

“How come you got to be so clever Cassie?’

“I retain a lot of information that is all.’ Learning is just about having a good memory I think.’ “You can learn a lot from reading a book.’

“Do you read a lot?’

“Yes, at least two books a week.’ in actual fact Cassie could read a book in a matter of minutes because she had a photographic memory.

“Do you have a particular kind of book that you like?’

Not really; as long as it is informative; I go to the library and spend whole days gathering information about all kinds of things.’

“There was book that I read about Charles Darwin that helped today.’

“Who was he?’

“Charles Darwin was an explorer; he discovered the Origin of Species which relates to Evolution.’

He claimed that man could have evolved from apes.’

“So he didn’t believe in God.’

“He believed that there was a man called Jesus but he did not believe that God created the world in 6 days and rested on the Sabbath which is a Sunday.’

Anthropology is a fascinating subject; “I will take you to the library on Saturday and we can join and bring home some books to read said Cassie.’ “It will help you in your studies.’ They stood in the top yard as the boys kicked a football around until the bell sounded and they made their way back to the classroom.

Waiting in the house was Don; he had hurried back in case Linda came early. The kettle was put on ready and he had filled the cups with coffee and heated some milk.

He took out a packet of custard creams from the cupboard and then spread them on a plate. Don jumped when there was a knock at the door and fart barked loudly.

He went to the door sheepishly and opened it and it was Linda.

“Come in Linda the kettle is on.’

“Did you manage to get Cassie enrolled at the school.’ said Linda as she put down a bag of shopping and took off her coat. Don had the electric fire on to warm the place up as he poured out the coffee then brought it out on a tray.

Linda picked up the mug and took a sip.

“Are you trying to get me fat Don with these biscuits?’

Don gave a half smile and looked for a way to begin. He put down his coffee and then looked Linda in the eye before saying. “Linda I asked you around because I have something to tell you.’

“Go on then Don, Don’t be shy, what ever it is can’t be that bad that we cannot solve it.’

“I have done a stupid thing Linda.’

“What have you done Don; Linda had now a serious look on her face as she waited for Don to speak.
