It was going to be a long night he thought as he played out different scenario’s in his head as he lay on his bed in his pyjamas. He tossed and turned throughout the night. When he did eventually drop off he dreamt that the police burst into his house and that he was hand cuffed and taken away. Cassie was put into another car she was calling for him to help her and there was nothing at all he could do. Waking up with a jolt beads of sweat were on his forehead. He looked at the clock it was only four forty two. He got up and put on the kettle and fart came out of the room and came to him whimpering.

“Not yet fart; I must have a cup of coffee first. Don took down a big tin of Nescafe coffee he placed two heaped tea spoons in a cup then heated some milk in a pan.

He waited until he saw the milk rising in the pan then turned off the gas and poured it into the cup. Taking a sip of the strong coffee seemed to bring him to some kind of normality. He reasoned with himself saying that he’d done nothing wrong. All he had done he had given a homeless child a shelter from the elements; given her food and put clean clothes upon her back. What was so wrong in that? By the time he’d finished his coffee he’d convinced himself that what he had done was the right thing. What if a stranger had taken her away and done something bad to her. At least he wasn’t like that. He washed shaved then put on his clothes. It was just after five now

He put on the dogs lead picked up a bag then locked the door quietly. Fart followed him across the road then was let off the lead. He ran around the field then he began to bark at something so Don hurried over to where the dog was. On the ground was a rolled up ball of spines. It was a hedgehog that had obviously come out of hibernation. “It’s a bit early for you fellow isn’t it said Don as he placed the lead back on the dog then walked away. When they were a few yards away the hedgehog unfurled itself then scurried away. Two crows came down to join several seagulls that were doing a kind of dance upon the grass just as the dawn was breaking. Both feet shuffled back and forth then the seagulls pulled out a worm and began to eat it. The crows tried in vain to wrestle the worm from the beak of the seagull but the grey and sky blue coloured bird flew off onto a roof top and devoured the worm. It seemed to give a triumphant squeal before taking off again and landing further on. The two crows now took off again knowing that they weren’t going to get a free meal today.

“Come on Fart; you got me out here now do something.’

The dog just looked at him As if to say I just want to play; it cocked its leg on a nearby sapling and Don decided to walk to the park then back again.

Walking slowly up the street he saw a couple of men on bicycles going to work.

His shift would end this Tuesday and he would have to go in at nine in the morning to clean then get ready for the afternoon session. He walked Fart right around the park; still he did nothing until they were right at the door.

He opened the door quietly then was about to close it again. Fart began to squat.

“Didn’t your mother never tell you never to mess on your own doorstep.

Don cleaned up the mess then crossed the road again and placed it in the bin before going in and washing his hands in the basin in the bathroom. He got some school clothes out for Cassie and put them on the chair in the bathroom along with her black training shoes.

Then he put the cereal out ready and some bowls. He would make beans on toast this morning for breakfast. He placed two slices of Hovis into the toaster then put the kettle back on to make tea. It was now just after seven thirty and Don turned on the Television. There was a news update saying that the girl that had run away from a children’s home had been spotted in the Scottish borders but when the police got there they realised that this was not the girl that they were looking for.
