"Nobody's Child" Cassie is an eleven year old girl who has been in a children's home since she was four years old. Very bright, Cassie excels in most subjects and can play Brahms and Mozart on the piano at the age of only six. Because of her age nobody wants to adopt her. Mrs Cummings the manager of Auton House is a wicked woman who treats Cassie and the rest in her charge badly and beats her with regularity. One day she is sent to clean out the toilet and bathroom and Mrs Cummings comes along to inspect them. Running a white glove over everything and looking for dirt. When she doesn't find any she then reaches up on the door - Cassie is only three feet six inches tall and was unable to reach up to the top of the door and Mrs Cummings sets about her with a cane. She beats her so badly that Cassie runs at her forcing her back where she hits her head on a wash basin. Cassie in her panic rushes out and runs away.- It is there that she meets Don a ex docker who takes pity on the girl - rea

“Everyone just shook their heads but Constable Rob Cranston noticed the look on Mrs Cummings face as she stared at the children.’

“Thank you Mrs Cummings we will let you know if we find her.’

“I’m sure you will endeavour to find her.’ we all want hr back safely.’

The two officers left the House and once outside Alan Ellerby said Christ those kids looked terrified.

“That place gives me the creeps said Rob Cranston lets get out of here.’

The got into the blue and white Hillman then drove away.’

“There’s something just not right about that place Rob and I’m going to find out what the hell is going on in there.’

“We are going to do some night shift work here Rob so bring a flask of coffee with you.’

When Alan Ellerby got back to the station he reported his findings to Sergeant Bill Wilson. “Right Ellerby I want you and Cranston to keep an eye on that place over the next few nights. See if we can find out more about this Mrs Martha Cummings an aal.’

“Yes sir.’

Get yourselves off and get a few hours; it’s going to be a long night.’

Both men turned smartly then left the station and headed home. Alan dropped Rob off on Gladstone Road in Billy Mill on his way home on Verne Road. “Pick you up at ten o’clock Alan.’

“Okay boss said Rob as he got out of the vehicle and walked down the path to his house.’

Alan Drove away heading up the coast road before turning left at the Commercial plastics factory. The smell from the place never changed as he pulled up outside his front door. His wife greeted him at the door.’

“You’re home sharp aren’t you?’

“Yeah I’ve got a late one tonight love.’ Come home for a few hours kip before I go to pick Rob up.’

Alan had only been married two years and they had no children yet.’ He joined the force as twenty two year old and loved his job. It was far better than selling insurance for the Liverpool Victoria and the money was better as well. He could retire at fifty with a good pension and get part time work as a security guard in a shopping mall which would bring in a bit of spending money.

“Have you eaten lunch Alan?’

“Aye, I ate a sandwich from the canteen and a cup of coffee.’

“Well if you are fed and watered then we have the rest of the afternoon to spend in bed.’

“You mucky mare Anne Ellerby said Alan as he chased her up the stairs to his bedroom.’

“He went to the bathroom first where he took off his uniform and hung it up before cleaning his teeth and washing himself in the basin.

He sprayed some deodorant under his arms then went into the bedroom where his wife was sitting on the bed in her underwear.
