“Can I help you said an elderly gentleman with a bald pate and gold rimmed spectacles. He wore a white shirt and a black coloured waist coat.’

“I was just looking mister.’

“Do you play an instrument?’

“Yes, I play the piano.’

“We have one near the window if you’d care to try it.’

“Yes, I would like that very much.’

Cassie followed the elderly man to the piano then sat on the stool her feet just touching the pedals below.

She lifted the cover and gazed down at the ivory and ebony coloured keys.

Do you require music Miss asked the shop owner we ha a large selection for beginners that you can play.’

Cassie smiled and then placed her hands onto the keys. Her hands had surprisingly long fingers and she began to play Brahms symphony No.1 in C minor effortlessly.

The man was taken aback by her skill as her hands moved across the keyboard.

People passed the window seeing the young girl playing the piano then stopped and came inside. By the time she was half way through the symphony, the shop began to fill up. They were fascinated to see a girl as young as this playing classical music.

When she was finished the now small crowd of people applauded.

There were requests for her to play Beethoven, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, and Chopin.

Cassie stayed in the shop playing until lunch time. People began leaving money for her and the shop owner made several sales.

“Thank you for allowing me to use your piano.’

“You are most welcome and please feel free to come again. My name is Sergei; may I ask you your name?’

“I am called Cassie.’

“You play so beautifully for one so young; how old are you by the way?

“I am eleven but I have been playing since I was six years old.’

“Really, well you must come again tomorrow, if you’re not at school that is.’

“I will come in my lunch break.’

Cassie counted the money she had been given and she had nearly three pounds.

She went straight to the café and ordered a meal. She ate a steak pie and some chips with peas and a cup of tea. The chips were of a frozen, which were not to her liking but she ate them all the same with tomato sauce because she didn’t know if she would eat tonight or not.

Walking into charity shop Cassie bought more underwear. She had to discard the ones she wore after a few days because there was no where to wash and dry them. She bought herself a blanket and a cushion and found a piece of thick plastic used to wrap mattresses up that had been discarded in the back lane. She folded it and put it into the bag with her cushion and blanket then headed to the library. Walking around she found a book by Frances Hodgson Burnett called the Secret Garden. She took the book to the table and began to read it. The story told of a young girl called Mary Lennox in 20th century India where being the child of well to do parents Mary lived. She was unloved by her parents and was spoilt by the servants. She was aggressive and totally selfish.

Then her parents are both killed after an outbreak of cholera. Mary is sent to Yorkshire to live with her uncle and it is there that she discovers the secret garden after a hearing of a lady who had died there. A robin redbreast comes to her window and she feeds it. It shows her where the secret garden and the key to the doorway are.
