Just Keep Snapping

This starts out with a few short stories about the monster of the book then starts the story at about chapter 4! Hope you like it!

2. Johnny

So that was the first story of this fearsome beast. And there is more to come. Virginia might have listened. But not little Johnny.

Johnny was walking down the street towards the park to meet his friends. It was almost dusk and they were going to egg their teacher, Mr. Smithers, house. He saw his friend Darry rushing across the park as he turned the corner of Brussel street.

“Johnny!” Darry called out, not hesitating to stop.

“What’s wrong dude?” Johnny called back. He could tell something was up by the way Darry looked. He came skidding to a halt in front of Johnny.

    “It’s here.” he whispered.

    “What?” Johnny asked.

“T-the monster.” Darry stuttered, looking around carefully. “Dude, we gotta get out of here.”

“You actually believed that folklore? Really Darry? I thought you were better than that.” Johnny shook his head.

“It chased me over here!” Darry yelled. “It’s on it’s way. Let’s go!” and with that Darry started to run back the way Johnny had come. He turned back quickly and shouted, “What are you waiting for? Let’s-” and that was the last sentence Johnny ever heard Darry speak. A thing jumped out of the bushes right next to him. It was twice his size, all black, beady eyes.

“It’s…” was all Johnny could get out.

“Ahhh!” Darry screamed as it picked him up in his mouth. He continued his screaming as the monster feasted. It consumed Darry’s legs and that was when Johnny realized there was no saving him. He bolted in the other direction. He ran as fast as his legs could carry him. He heard a howl in the night and knew Darry was gone. He kept running while trying to come up with something.

“What was it they said to do? Clap?” Johnny asked himself. He should have paid more attention to the story. He tried clapping and heard a growl very close by. “No clapping!” he said to himself. He kept running, even though he had no idea where he was going. His house was now 4 blocks in the other direction. He had run into a vast forest and was about to stop when he realized he heard nothing. Now, in this situation, nothing is a very bad thing. He looked around, and not seeing anything assumed he was alone. Suddenly, he was hit from behind. He was pinned to the ground by the beast.

“Please!” Johnny screamed for redemption. The monster just snarled back. He opened his mouth and Johnny saw a flaming pit of souls inside. He screamed louder and the monster breathed right in his face. He got a good look at it. It’s eyes were huge, it’s teeth longer than his arm. He started to cry, knowing it was the end. Then, it might have been Johnny’s imagination but, he heard the monster snarl,

“This is what you get for not listening to your mummy.” he had no idea what that meant. His mother had been dead for 3 years. He couldn’t recall anything. Then he remembered her telling the story of the monster when he was little. It all came back and he shouted out,

“It was snapping!” Right as the monster bit off his head. Some say Johnny’s screams echoed through the night for more than 3 hours after his death. Others say it was for days. Some say, if you listen by a forest at night you can still hear Johnny scream,

“It was snapping!” as the monster lets out a hideous howl.
