3. Chapter Three

"Hey, Violet," my dad said stepping into the new nursery.

I rocked myself in the rocking chair, attempting to get Ryan to sleep, considering he was up all night last night. "What's wrong?" I asked, taking my in my dad's features.

"How do you know something's wrong?"

"It's the same look you gave me when I was little and you needed to talk to me. Your eyebrows rise up and you cross your hands in front of you."

"Yeah, I wanted to talk to you about something rather serious."

"What's up?" I put Ryan in his crib, sound asleep.

"I know you're about a week into having a baby but I wanted you to start training again. You haven't trained for almost a year because of Ryan and now that he's born, I want you to start up again."

"Dad, um, here's the thing. I don't know if I want to start up again. You know, training, missions and all of that that, I'm putting myself in danger and I'm risking my own life. But I have a baby now that needs me, especially because he doesn't have a father. I can't put myself as risk anymore."

"I understand where you're coming from. But this is what you were born to do,"

"Dad, I'll train for you, but don't expect me to start up missions again. At least for a while."

"Alright. Come on then, I want to start immediately. The more time you train the more time you can do it on your own." I followed my dad out of the room, heading towards the sliding glass doors. That's the worst thing about my dad; he was born to be a trainer and he has to continue training for his whole life, no matter what happens. And unfortunately, having a baby doesn't stop him.

"Where's Jen, Dad?"

"At school," Jenna, her sweet, pure, innocent soul. Learning about me is something I never want her to find out about. She's seen me train when she was just a baby, but she hardly remembers that but now... if she sees anything she'll remember, talk and then repeat.

"We're going over the basics. What happens, why it happens, when it happens and how it happens."

"Why is mum staring at you like you just killed the dog?"

"She doesn't want me doing this,"

"Do you blame her?"

"Doesn't matter. What happens when you and Luke are apart for too long?"

"We get sick,"

"Wrong. Again."

"You always told me we would get sick."

"You die. Why does that happen?"

"Because the brain can't function without that extra voice in there."

"Good. What happens when you don't clear your mind when you're moving things?"

"You lose focus."

"Good. Why do you lose focus?"

"You have too much on your mind."

"What's the consequence of reproducing with somebody else?"

"Death or you have to leave."

"What's the council?"

"My uncle," I slapped my hand over my mouth, not realizing the words that slipped. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

"We're done for today,"

"Dad, mum told me h-"

"No other words, okay? Go inside and rest while I speak to your mother."

I sat in the rocking chair, listening to my parents fighting. Fighting about my stupidity. About my words. About my family. My dad's voice was prominent from the room next to me but my mum's could barely be heard.

"You not only put Violet at risk, but you put her son!"

"She had to know, John. She couldn't live in the dark. Especially with Ryan."

"So what? Scare her!? Make her regret she ever had a kid? Make her go away like you did?"

"John, I would never let Xander take any of them away from us. He may be on the council, but he's still my brother. My only living family member, John."

"And you would think he would protect his niece?"

"He would,"

"You said the same thing about yourself, Jackie. And about your mother."

"He's still my brother."

"Your brother hates this family, Jack! We all went against their rules!"

"I can't do this right now. When and if the time he comes happens, we'll deal with it then. But for now, let Violet raise her son. Let your daughter raise her son."

"I can't do that. I can't have the thought of your brother, who is on the council come here and take what's ours away. I can't let that happen. Even if it's the last thing I do."

"You know these three kids are stronger than everyone thinks they are. Than they think they are. Luke and Violet, John, they are so much stronger. Jenna too."

"I can't let you put those kids in danger."

"Your job is to train them. You put them in their own danger everyday. What makes this different?"

"Violet has a baby, Luke has a girlfriend who he loves, Jenna is only eight years old, Jackie."

"You were just telling me last week the sooner the better."

"I guess I'll get training them harder then. But you need to get your daughter into training again. She won't do it."

"Hello?" I asked, silencing my phone.

"Vi, what the hell is going on over there? I just got this huge sweep of emotion."

"Just fighting parents again. The norm since I moved back in."

"Wanna talk about it?"

"No, I'm fine. Ryan is starting to wake up. I'll see you later, Luke."

"Vi, wa-" I threw my phone on my bed and opened my bedroom door.

"Will training protect Ryan?" I asked, standing in my parent's doorway. They both turned to me. "Answer my question."

"Yes, it will."

"I'll do it."
