A Court of Thorns and Roses

Feyre is a huntress. She thinks nothing of slaughtering a wolf to capture it's prey. But, like all mortals, she fears what lingers mercilessly beyond the forest. And she will learn that taking the life or a magical creature comes at a high price... Imprisoned in an enchanted court in her enemy's kingdom, Feyre is free to roam but forbidden to escape. Her captor's body bears the scars of fighting, and his face is always masked - but his piercing stare draws her ever closer. As Feyre's feelings for Tamlin begin to burn through every warning she's been told about his kind, an ancient, wicked shadow grows. Feyre must find a way to break a spell, or lose her heart forever...

16. Scene 16 - Nameless

(FEYRE is asleep in her bed, when off-stage screaming wakes her up. TAMLIN walks on stage right carrying TORTURED FAERIE, followed by LUCIEN. TAMLIN puts the bleeding, screaming faerie down on the dining room table, as FEYRE arrives)

TAMLIN – Scouts found him dumped just over the borderline. He's Summer Court.

LUCIEN – By the Cauldron!

TORTURED FAERIE – My wings… she took my wings… (pause) She took my wings… she took my wings…

(FEYRE and TAMLIN both pick up bandages, and attempt to stop the bleeding)

TORTURED FAERIE – She took my wings…

TAMLIN – Keep still, or you'll bleed out faster.

TORTURED FAERIE – N-n-no (screams)

TAMLIN – Lucien…

(LUCIEN takes a step back, and throws up, just off stage right)

FEYRE – (quietly) Please. Please hold still.

TORTURED FAERIE – She took my wings… she took them…

FEYRE – (murmuring) I know. I know.

TAMLIN – The wounds aren't clotting.

FEYRE – Can't you use your magic?

TAMLIN – No. Not for major damage. Once, but not any more.

TORTURED FAERIE – She took my wings…

NARRATOR – I knew, right there, right then, that the faerie was going to die. Death wasn't just hovering in that room; it was counting down the faerie's remaining heartbeats.

TORTURED FAERIE – She took my wings…

(FEYRE brushes TORTURED FAERIE'S hair back)

FEYRE – It'll be alright. It will be alright.

FEYRE – You'll get them back.

TORTURED FAERIE – You promise?

FEYRE – (holding her hand) Yes.

TAMLIN – Cauldron save you. Mother hold you. Pass through the gates, and smell that immortal land of milk and honey. Fear no evil. Feel no pain. Go, and enter eternity.

(TORTURED FAERIE takes one last big breath, then sags on the table)

TAMLIN – (gripping FEYRE'S shoulder) She's gone. Let her go. (long pause) Feyre.

FEYRE - Who could do something like this? Who did do this?

NARRATOR - I watched as Tamlin's shoulders slumped. And for the first time that evening, I looked at him - really looked at him. No claws, no fangs, no weapons. This was an enemy that he was powerless again. And just the thought of someone that made Tamlin seem powerless made my knees quake. It was an effort to still stand. And who was this "she"? This nameless "she"? Whatever I had suspected, the answer was far, far worse than I could ever have imagined.

(taking FEYRE by the hand, leads her down stage right steps, along front of stage, and up stage left steps)

FEYRE – We can't leave her there.

TAMLIN – I know. I was going to walk you upstairs first.

FEYRE – I want to go with you.

TAMLIN – It's too deadly at night for you to…

FEYRE – I can hold my…

TAMLIN – No. I must do this. Alone. (pause) Feyre, why? You dislike my kind on a good day. And after Andras… So why?

FEYRE – Because I wouldn't want to die alone. Because I'd want someone to hold my hand until the end, and awhile after that. That's something everyone deserves, human or faerie. (pause) I regret what I did to Andras. I regret that there was… such hate in my heart. I wish that I could undo it – and… I'm sorry. So very sorry.

(TAMLIN nods and turns away, jogging back to stage right, picking up TORTURED FAERIE and exiting stage right, as the lights dim)
