Ralph Mason and Rob Black heard the explosion as they came down the motorway on the coast road. They quickly followed the trail of smoke to the scene. The firemen were putting out the flames as they arrived.’

What happened asked Ralph as he surveyed the damage to what was left of the car that was now just a burnt out shell.

“From eye witnesses the car was travelling at speed down here then exploded sir.

Any casualties?’

“Three, all dead I’m afraid.’ No civilians hurt sir.’

“Alright sergeant, send me a report to my office; Ralph gave him his card then got into his car and headed to Seamus’ house. There was a police car outside after a neighbour had reported seeing a man with a gun.

Ralph and Rob went inside then saw Seamus and Liam talking to an officer.’

“Alright officer we will take it from here said Ralph showing his badge.’

“Yes sir said the policeman as he made himself scarce.’

“I think we could all use a strong cup of coffee after that don’t you said Seamus.’

“How did you do it how did you plant the bomb in McGill’s car without being seen?’

“His car packed in one afternoon it was only a spark plug and it had over heated but I told them it was more serious. “ It was a risk I was prepared to take but it was worth it.’ “Was anyone hurt in the explosion just now?’

“No just the occupants in the car’ They’re all dead.’

“Thank God for that.’

“We have to get you out of here so we can relocate you and your family Seamus. It still isn’t safe here.’

“How long is that going to take?

“A couple of days I expect. Pack a bag with a few things and we will drive you to your wife and daughter.

“Can I go and see someone first Da’ I won’t be long.’

“Go on then but don’t be long son.’

Liam went out of the house that still smelled of cordite from the shot earlier, he ran down towards Jan’s house and didn’t stop until he reached the door. When Jan came to the door she ran out and threw her arms around him and kissed him unashamedly.

“Look Jan I’ve come to say goodbye.’

“Goodbye; you’re not leaving me now are you?’

“No, but we have to go somewhere safe; the IRA are after us Jan it is not safe for us to stay here.’

“But when will we see each other?’

“I don’t know Jan but all I can do is write to you when we get settled. “ If you get a postcard from abroad from someone that you’ve never heard of it will be from me.’

“I hope by then you can come and live with me.’

“What about my studies Liam?’

“You can go to a University in Australia with me.’

“Would you leave your mother and come and live with me on the other side of the world.’

“I was leaving to go to Sheffield in the summer anyway Liam.’

“Yes but Sheffield isn’t 12.000 miles away is it.’

“I know that but I love you and I couldn’t bear not seeing you again.’

“You will have to speak with your father and tell him of your plan to study abroad.’ “I’m sure that he will understand.’

“My mother won’t be happy but she will just have to cope.’ When are you leaving?’

In a couple of days; but we have to go to a safe house in an hour.’
