The window was down and he reached in and placed his fingers on the artery in the man’s neck to check for a pulse; there was none. Rob then checked the man on the ground. There was a trail of blood from the other mans head, but he was breathing.

“Who sent you he asked.’ The man tried to speak but bubbling blood came from his mouth. This man had massive internal injuries. There must have been a puncture in his lung because the man was fighting for breath.

“Helen wait here; I’m going to call an ambulance.’

Robert sprinted the hundred yards to the hotel and then ran inside and asked the receptionist to call an ambulance and quickly. He gave him the details then Robert then ran back to the crash scene.

Helen couldn’t look at the man on the ground as he fought for breath.

It was seven minutes later when the ambulance arrived and a police car followed.’

Rob gave details of what happened showed a card to the police constable and he was allowed to use the car radio. Please put me through to this number immediately. It’s a National Security Issue. Rob gave the person on the other end the number and waited for a reply.

It was Ralph Mason who took the call and he answered.

“Hi Rob, are you alright?’

“Yes Ralph, two men tried to force me off the road tonight.’ One of them is dead and the other critical.’

“Right get yourself home I will find out where they are taking him and have security watch over him.’ “Come to the headquarters as soon as you can.’

“Will do Ralph.’

Robert hung up then went back to his own car.

Helen had started to sober up a little and asked what had happened.’

“It was just a couple of joy riders Helen; nothing to worry about.’

Robert started the car and continued on his way.

“I thought we were going to end up over the cliffs there for a moment.’

“Not with my superior driving skills Helen.’

Rob drove past the Priory Castle then along towards Northumberland Park.

“Well you said that you liked adventure Helen; you’ve certainly had some tonight.’

“It was a splendid evening Robert; it will be my turn next time.’

“It was now twelve forty by the time Rob pulled in outside of Helens house. The lights were out in the bungalow. Robert jumped out then opened the door for Helen.

“Are you okay said Rob as he walked Helen to the gate. “ I will call you tomorrow.’

“Alright whispered Helen pointing at the house.’

Rob kissed Helen briefly then ran to the car and drove away. He now had a long night filling in a report. He wondered how the men knew where he was going. He now had to keep an eye on Helen because she would surely be a target.’

Helen snapped out of her daydream as she pulled into her father’s driveway in Apple Tree Gardens. She now had to go and break the news to her parents that she was getting a divorce from Robert. She should have known Robert had been totally dedicated to his job and that she would have taken second place to it. She went into the boot and pulled out the case that she had packed with her clothes. Helen liked the idea of the exciting and dangerous job Robert had but hated coming home to an empty house whilst he worked way into the night. There never seemed to be enough time for them both. She desperately wanted children and felt that time was running out. It would be better to make the break now that she was 36 years old. She could meet
