same colour as the other girl stipulated by Thompson’s Travel agency; her blue eyes captivated him.

Being on the force her was able to guess her vital statistics at a glance and he liked what he saw.

“I’ll see you on Friday then said Helen Kelso with a smile.’

When Rob had gone Mary Stephenson the taller of the two girls spoke.’

“How come you get to go on holiday with some hunky bloke; I’ve worked here six years and no one has ever asked me out yet.’ “What am I doing wrong?’

“I don’t know Mary; it’s the first time for me too.’

“Are you going to go on holiday with him?’

“I don’t know, maybe; but if he is expecting what I think he is then he is mistaken.’

“What you wouldn’t jump into bed with him.’

“What type of girl do you think I am?’

“One with some sense I hope; look here Helen I know you are only twenty four but this is a marvellous opportunity. “ Did he tell you what his job was?’

“No, All I know about him is his name his date of birth and his home address; which is in East Howdon.’

“How old is he?’

“He’s twenty two; he’s a bit young for me don’t you think.’

“ It seems to me that you are making a lot of excuses for not going out with him Helen.’

“I know but what am I to tell my mother.’

“Tell her some handsome man came in the shop and asked you on a date.’

Leave the rest out until nearer the time and if you like you can tell her you’re going with me.’

“Can I, but knowing my mother she will want to come to the airport with me to see me off?’

“Tell her not to embarrass you by coming to the airport and that you are a big girl now.

“Yes, I see where you are coming from.’

Helen went back into the computer and brought up the holiday that Robert would be going on and printed off all the information to give him on Friday when she would see him again. She hadn’t been on date in two years. The last time it was with Eric Foster from Battlehill in Wallsend and it was a disaster. They went to a dance called Casey’s in the town centre. Eric had two left feet he kept on standing on her foot. “He was the worst dancer she had ever seen he was a bit weird in his dress sense she thought and he smoked these roll ups that stunk to high heaven. She later found out that he liked to smoke Cannabis. He wasn’t aggressive at all but it was his unkempt appearance that put her off. They only went out four times and the final straw came the night Eric gave her father a roll up and within twenty five minutes he was completely stoned.

Her father Harry Kelso who was brought up on the music of Frank Sinatra and Perry Como tried to dance to Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix and the Experience. It was pathetic to watch her fifty eight year old father making a fool of himself and she ushered Eric outside and told him to bugger off and never come back again. She was able to laugh about it now but at that time it wasn’t funny. Helen never saw Eric again for a long time until one afternoon she was posting a letter for her mother and there was Eric and this hippy girl who was heavily pregnant walking along the road. Helen dived for cover in the doorway of the post office until they had past. She breathed a huge sigh of relief as they walked out of sight and she was able to go about her business.
