The draws and cupboards had been opened and left in a state of disarray. Then she checked the bathroom as that is where she had found her mother the last time.

Then she came down stairs and went into the kitchen and dining area.

“My mother is out; that means she won’t be back until twelve tonight.’

“Will you be okay?’

“Yes, I think so Liam I’m just sick of it; it’s alright for my dad he’s working away and hasn’t had to deal with it like I have.’

“Liam went towards Jan and took her in his arms and just held her. The tears were streaming down her face as he told her that he would look after her.’

“You can come and stay at my house if you like. You can sleep in my room and I can sleep on the sofa.’

No she sobbed I will be better off here where I can keep an eye on my mother.’

“You need help though Jan’ you are just seventeen for God sake.’

I’ will be eighteen in February.’

“That’s funny so will I.’

“Mine is on the 11th.’

“Mine is the 17th said Liam.’

“So I am older than you by six days.’

“Yes he laughed.’

“Would you like a coffee?’

“No thanks’, but a glass of coke or something would be nice.’

“Would you like Ice?’

“Yes if you have it.’

Jan went off into the kitchen and opened the large American styled fridge freezer and took out a bottle of coke then poured it into a glass then put a few cubes of ice in it.’

She walked back into the sitting room and Liam was sitting on the sofa.

“Here, is that enough ice for you?’

“I hope that it’s fresh ice not that frozen rubbish.’

“Jan punched him playfully and then snuggled up to Liam on the sofa.

Liam set his glass down then kissed Jan softly on the lips she responded and then took Liam by the hand and led him to her bedroom.

Rob Black drove Ralph Mason down to the Black Middens where they sat with a pair of binoculars looking out into the darkness.

“Bloody cold one tonight sir said Rob as he waited until Ralph had scanned the river and along towards Lord Cuthbert Collingwood’s monument. Ironically a seagull sat on the head of the Sealord and it seemed as if they were both looking out towards the piers at Tynemouth.

“What time is it now asked Rob he’d forgotten to put on his watch and he felt naked without it. “ The Timex watch had been bought by his father when he was sixteen and he hadn’t felt the need to buy another when the watch kept perfect time.’

“It’s just gone twenty past one.’

“There’s no sign of our friends yet then.’

“Keep scanning said Ralph as he passed over the binoculars over to Rob.’ They had to sit with the lights and engine off because they didn’t want to be seen as they tucked in beside the old kipper house. Rob was gasping for a cigarette but couldn’t light one up.
