planned attacks and arms dumps. After several weeks of Dennis Lord going into the office to speak to her; she asked him “Why don’t you just ask me out Dennis; instead of coming here every day.’

“Well would you go out with me; I mean I am a lot older than you and what would the other girls say about me dating someone years younger than me?’

“I don’t think it would bother them or me for that matter; unless it bothers you that is.’

“No Julia, it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.’

“I mean you don’t look forty Dennis.’ It’s alright to call you Dennis isn’t it?’

“Yes of course it is how old do I look then said Dennis hopefully.’

“Certainly not a day over thirty nine she said with a giggle.’

The other girls in the office were now listening as Dennis broke out into laughter. “Where are we going then for our first date asked Julia?’

“Well there’s a nice new restaurant called Del Marco’s in town if you would like to go with me.’

“Tonight Dennis?’

“Why not, I mean I can get the time off.’

“I think I’m washing my hair tonight?’

“Oh I see, another night then said Dennis with a look of disappointment on his face. He was about to walk away when she called him back.’

Dennis turned in his blue suit and brown brogues and came back to where Julia was standing.

“Maybe I can wash my hair tomorrow; pick me up outside at 7 pm. “I will go with you as long as you don’t mind me going in my work clothes.’

“You look smart enough to me said Dennis.’

“Seven o’clock then.’

The girls all applauded as Dennis walked away with the biggest smile on his face. He couldn’t believe his luck to be dating a woman who was only twenty four years old.

Throughout the whole afternoon he couldn’t concentrate on his work for the thought of seeing this beautiful woman and when the time came to leave he was out the office door and running to the lift. He pressed the button and waited for them to open before stepping inside and pressing another button to take him to the basement where the car park was. He whistled away as the lift descended then came to a stop. The doors opened and he made his way to his car. Dennis owned a gold coloured Ford Cortina MK3. It had light tan leather upholstery three doors and alloy wheels. It retained the 1.3 litre entry point and could do 58miles to the gallon. It was the best selling car of 1970 and Dennis was so pleased to own it outright. He turned the ignition and the engine softy purred. He drove out of the car park then swung around to the front of the three bridges hotel and waited for Julia to appear.

“He looked at his watch it was now five past seven, his impatience was apparent as he pulled out a cigarette then stepped out of the car and lit it. Dennis wouldn’t dream of smoking inside his car. He inhaled the smoke deep into his lungs then exhaled sending a stream of smoke into the air.

Like an expectant father he began to pace the road outside stopping every few yards to see if she was coming. By ten past seven he thought that he’d been stood up as he got back into his car and was about to pull away. Then he saw her walking towards him

Julia walked with the grace of an antelope as he took in every curve of her body. He felt like a schoolboy; it was hard to believe he’d been married before. It had been almost six years since his wife passed away due to cancer and he thought that he’d be alone for the rest of his life. Dennis leaned across and opened the door.
