“He went to the kitchen then put on the kettle as he heard his sister get up. She had not long gone to bed and was reading “Our Kate’ a story about Catherine Cookson a local writer. Catherine wrote about the poverty, hardship, and struggles of many townsfolk in the North East of England. It was something Moira could relate to.’

Her own husband Jack Mortimer; had abandoned her for another woman. Now divorced she reverted back to her old surname of Armstrong. Moira slipped on her dressing gown then walked into the Kitchen.

“Hello Moira said her brother and they embraced each other. It had been over two years since she had seen her brother but he always managed to send her some money no matter where he was. Last year he was posted to Gibraltar; under the command of Major General Simon Dack, and Commodore Allan Bell. The 500 troops deployed there used the 34r miles of tunnels and the mountains as training exercises. They were posted there to control the shipping through the Straits and the gateway to the Mediterranean.

“Do you know where this Dickson lives asked Arma.’

“Yes, he has a flat on Coach Lane.

“What’s his number.

“Its 126 at the bottom beside “Summers’ the clothes shop.

“Yes,’ I know where it is.

Moira made him a cup of tea and asked if he’d eaten anything. He seemed deep in thought.’

“Have you eaten anything Neil?’

“I’m not hungry Moira; look I haven’t got a lot of time I’m AWOL so they will be sending the Redcaps out to look for me to take me back.’ “I’m going to sort this Dickson out then I’m going to see Margaret.’

“Don’t do anything stupid will you?’

“Don’t worry Moira, I do this for a living, I’m a professional soldier.’

“Can I change into so different clothes?’

“Yes, use the spare room.’

Neil finished his tea then went to the passage for his kit bag and then went to the spare room. He took off his Army Uniform and hung it up then he put on a pair of dark trousers and a black roll necked sweater and a woollen hat. He placed a tube of camouflage grease into his pocket and put on some gloves. He now wore black training shoes. When he was ready he went back a told his sister that he was leaving and would be back in two hours.’

“Be careful Neil wont you.’

See you soon Sis’ don’t worry, it’s going to be fine.’

Neil slipped out into the darkness after greasing up his face. He ran all the way through the side streets under the cover of darkness. He avoided the main roads. He hid in a shop doorway as a police car drove past him on Russell Street. He ran through Scots park and then down the back lane. There was a galvanised bin outside the back door ready for the binman with the door number on it he moved it closer to the wall and climbed onto it then onto the back wall of the house he dropped down into the back yard that hadn’t changed in over 30 years; leading up a flight of steps there was a back door he found the key under a flower pot and he carefully opened it and went into the darkness. Silently like a deadly snake he got to the top and opened the door that led into the scullery. There was two cups on the table and he wondered if his wife was here with him lying in his bed. He took out his commando knife then worked his way along a passage where he could hear Dickson snoring. He went into another bedroom pulled the pillowcase off the bed then went to Dickson’s room.
