She knew that her father would be in soon because he had been out since six o’clock that morning doing a half shift then he was going to fix someone’s car from work.

The Co-op closed at 5pm so her mother would be on the first bus home.

Liam put on the kettle to make a pot of tea then went to the bathroom where upon he checked his chin to see if he needed another shave. He washed himself and then put on a clean tee shirt. He put on his wrangler Jeans and some clean socks.

“Are you doin’ the washin’ Bren.’

Aye;” bring it in and I will put it in the washer now.

Brenda went through to the utility room switched on the washing machine put all the coloured clothes in from the basket and waited until Liam gave her his to do. She tipped some Dreft into the twin tub and set it away.

“Put that stew into the oven for me Liam it’s a bit heavy for me to lift.’

Liam picked up the big cast iron pot and placed it inside the oven.

“Are you making some corner cakes to go with that?’

“Yes, but it’s too soon to put them in yet.’

Brenda took out a bowl from the cupboard and a packet of suet and some flour and began to mix some dough to make the corner cakes as they called them. In the North East they called them dumplings. They were put in for half an hour until they turned golden brown and looked like cakes.

Then she emptied the teapot and replaced four PG Tips tea bags into it and set it on top of the warm oven. Her father told her that if the pot was warm that the tea infused more quickly and it was far stronger than if the pot was cold.

“Her father was usually right.’

On Malvern Road Janice slipped silently into the house and went to her room up the stairs only to hear the sound of her mother making love.

She was quite surprised thinking that her father had come home early and came back down and sat in the kitchen.

Twenty minutes later her mother came down and she was only wearing a shirt and was naked underneath. It wasn’t her father’s shirt it was Melvin Thomas who lived up the streets shirt and he was standing behind her mother in his trousers and shoes but was stripped to the waist.

“I… I never heard you come in dear said her mother embarrassingly; “Melvin was Helping me fix the wardrobe upstairs.’

“Yes, and does that include fixing your love life as well?’

“Listen don’t tell your father about this; “I mean what do you expect, he’s away most of the bloody year and I’m stuck here on my own.’ “Don’t think your father is a saint either.’ “I’ve heard the rumours going around.’ I’m a bloody laughing stock that’s what I am.’

“Look I better go said Melvin as he put on his jacket and zipped it up.

“Will I see you later?’

“I… don’t know Gillian; I’ll give you a call.’

“Well I’m going to the club tonight whether you go or not.’

Melvin made his way out as Gillian went upstairs to put on some clothes.

When she returned she asked if her daughter wanted something to eat.

No, I will make myself something later.’

“Well there are some cold meats there and some salad if you would like some.’

“Are you and dad getting a divorce?’

“I don’t know, but I cannot live like this anymore Janice it’s driving me crazy.’

“Why don’t you get a job, do something instead of sitting in the house all day.’
