Juniper, a seventeen year old Instagram baddie who is obsessed with The 1975, can't sleep one night so instead of sleeping, she roams the empty streets of the town she lives in-Taos, New Mexico-with her two best friends, Asher, and Violet, and her crush, Grayson. They break and enter in different places. It's every rebellious teenagers dream.

“Guys. We’re here.” I said with a delicacy in my voice.

Everyone’s eyes crept open and looked around.

“Where are we?” Grayson asked rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.

“I want you to see the sunrise. It’s amazing.” I replied.

I grabbed my polaroid camera as we piled out of the truck and I led the way towards the best spot to see the sunrise. We passed trees and dirt and rocks for a while until i sat at the end of a cliff. Following my lead as if we were playing follow the leader, they sat along the edge of the cliff with me and looked out. The beauty could never be captured with a camera but I attempted. I got up while everyone was focused on the sunrise and walked a bit behind them. Graeme was sitting on Grayson’s lap and Asher and Violet were leaning back on their hands. I snapped a picture of everyone looking onto the bright orange sun and went and sat back down.

“Where did you go?” Grayson asked me.

“Nowhere.” I replied shaking the polaroid.

I leaned onto Grayson’s shoulder and told him a secret of mine, “I come here sometimes in the morning when I can’t sleep and I just look out at the sun and think about what it would be like to be the sun.”

“Well, Juniper, you really outdid yourself to show us your thinking spot. I have never seen something this beautiful. Well, except you of course.” I looked up at him and blushed. He brushed my now dry curly hair out of my face and behind my ear and smiled. I looked down at Graeme who was sleeping against Grayson’s broad chest.

“So you really want to adopt Graeme?” I asked.

“Yeah I do. I don’t want to be a dad, but this kid deserves someplace that loves him. I’ve heard foster care sucks.” Grayson said as if he had been in foster care.

“Were you in foster care?” I asked Grayson.

He didn’t respond. I wanted to know but I wasn’t one to pry, so I just looked out onto the sunrise with everyone else. The bright, vibrant colors made me think for awhile. I looked down at my phone to see the time.

‘5:07am Wednesday September 17th, 2018’ is what the screen said.

“Hey guys we should probably head home. I’m supposed to be up in less than hour.” I declared.

“Yeah same here.” Violet said.

Grayson just looked out on the sunrise longer as if he didn’t hear what I said.

“Grayson.” I said loudly shaking his shoulder.

“Sorry. What?” he snapped out of his gaze and looked back at me.

“We’re going home.” I repeated.

“Oh. Okay.” he said sleepily.

Grayson woke Graeme up and had him sit on the edge as he got up. Once he was up, he picked up Graeme and proceeded to head back to the truck. We hopped in and drove off. Everyone fell asleep to the sound of the wind against the truck.

I pulled up next to Violet’s house. She grabbed her longboard and disappeared behind her window. After I watched to see if she got in safely, I drove off to Asher’s house. She also grabbed her skateboard and climbed up and escape ladder and tossed her board into her window and followed after it. I then drove off and stopped on Burch Street.

“What house is yours?” I asked Grayson.

“It’s the light adobe suburb house with white trim and green roofing.”

I pulled up to the house that had all of those characteristics.

“Are you gonna take Graeme?” I asked.

“Yeah. He can sleep in my bedroom. It’ll be fine. I’ll come up with something to tell my parents.”

“Well I hope it’ll be something believable.” I said with a giggle.

“Yeah me too.”

I drove myself home and snuck into the sliding glass door that was in the basement. I was much too tired from the eventful night to take my remaining makeup up off, so I went straight to bed. I hooked my almost dead phone onto the charger and put on The 1975 and went to sleep.

It felt like I had just fell asleep when my alarm went off. I put my snooze on and rolled over. Again, my alarm went off. I rolled over and groaned. My head hurt so much from the lack of sleep but I got out of bed anyways and walked into my bathroom. I looked at myself in the mirror. My makeup was smeared and my hair was a rat’s mess. I took the fake lashes I was sporting the night before off and jumped into the shower. I fell asleep against the wall as the warm water hit against my back. I replayed the night in my mind and hopped out of the shower. I sure was not ready to face the day ahead of me.
