I heard the rain pouring down the window, another sleepless night. Summer was almost over. I tossed and turned until I heard someone downstairs. In no time I was standing beside my bed and on my way down to the noise. I walked slowly without a sound towards it ready to defend myself. I saw a tall, dark shadow in the kitchen and I grab the closest thing there was and swung it through the air… the mystic shape grab my “weapon” and turned it against me. We fought and suddenly the lights were on and I started to recognize the person in front of me.

“What the heck are you doing, Caitlin!”

“Sorry I thought you were someone trying to break in!” I said with a low voice

“I was just grabbing a snack. What has gotten into you lately?” he said frustrated.

The shadow was my big brother Jason. Jason has always taken good care of me, and lately he has been very concerned. People call him overprotective and I know he is just trying to help but lately I’ve been very distant. I don’t know why but I feel something pulling we away from this place.

“Go back to bed Caitlin. You look very exhausted, when was last time you slept, like real sleep?”

I looked down on my feet and I realized that he was right. I couldn’t remember last time I really had a good night sleep. My mother stood in the door opening half a sleep.

“It’s the nightmares that won’t stop coming every time I fall asleep” I said frightened.

My mother looked nervous like every time I talk about it.

“Try go back to sleep, I can bring you a cup of tea if you want?”

I turned around and didn’t realize she was standing behind me the whole time and was the one who turned the lights on. I walked past her and walked back to my room.

“No thanks, Karen”

I lay back in the bed looking out the window, staring at the moon shining strait back in my room. I haven’t been able to sleep since Karen told me that she adopted me. Or she found me outside the front door in a basket with a letter and a necklace with my name on.

I know it’s a cliché, but it’s a cliché I have to live with. I grew up with Karen and Jason who’s two years older than me. I couldn’t stop thinking about how a person could leave his or hers kid to someone else. I’ve always called her mother but after she told me I wasn’t hers I couldn’t call her that anymore. I couldn’t stop thinking about how much it made sense. My different looks, Jason and Karen had the same dark brown hazel hair color and crystal clear emerald eyes. Unlike me with blonde hair and light blue, almost grey eyes.

The next morning I didn’t leave my room. I just lay in my bed, walked around the room or sat by the window. It was still raining and all I could think about is who my parents are, what kind of person they are, because who would ever leave their child some they never met.

Days went by and I didn't leave my room and occasionally either Jason or Karen came in with food and looked sadly at me. They kept trying to get me, out but I couldn’t. I didn’t feel welcome or wanted anymore. I didn’t belong here.

“Tomorrow is your birthday, are there anything would like to do?” tried Karen with the last bit of hope in her eyes.

I turned around and looked at Karen and Jason standing behind.

“I would like to meet my real parents. Do you know them? “

“Nn-no… we’ll see you tomorrow”

She walked out of my room with tears down her cheeks. Jason looked disappointed at me.

“Why do you have to make her sad. We know we aren’t your biological family but we’re still your family” he walked out angry and looked for Karen. I do understand him but did he ever think how it must feel to be me? I was the one somebody didn’t want and I was the one that didn’t fit in anywhere.

My birthday is tomorrow and I feel bad for Karen and I wanted to make things right, after all she’s the one who was willing to take another child even though she didn’t had to. I had to tell her how happy I was for that.

I tried to sleep again but it didn’t help. I felt lost in the night. I felt I wasn’t in the right place. I slowly drifted away into sleep for the first time in a while. I woke up to the smell of popping bacon. I just LOVE bacon! I jumped out of bed, putting on my slippers and ran downstairs to see Karen and Jason in the kitchen.

“Morning!” I Said loudly and happy.

“Somebody is in a good mood?” said Jason with a smirk on his lips.

Sat down on the table and took and apple. “I just felt bad for what I said yesterday and wanted to do something to forget all of this mess. I want us to do something as a family, like taking a walk in the park or something.”

Karen stood at the kitchen sink, washing the dishes. She looked at me shortly with a smile and went back to washing. I took a bite of my apple and threw it over to Jason who finished it. I walked over to Karen, jumped up and sat down beside her. “I owe you an apology for being so mean to you. You were trying to help me and I was just mad. I really appreciate that you took me in and gave me a family. I love u.”

She looked over at me and fast she dried her hands in a towel and throws her arms around me. “I love you too Caitie! I’m sorry for not telling you earlier. I should have said something but I was afraid of losing you.”

“You will never lose me. I will always love you, even if it seems like I don’t, I really do.”

After we started to hug even more. Jason came over to hug us even more. I was happy to be here but somehow I still didn’t feel whole. Somehow deep down I’ve always known I was different. Later that night I was in my room thinking. I looked out of my window once again. I had stopped raining. I heard the door opening followed by some knock at it. Karen came in. “hey can we talk?”  “Yeah sure.” I answered happily.

“Yesterday after we talked I went up at the attic and found this box with your name on” I looked at the box she was talking about and she walked over to me and sat down on the bed beside me. “It’s filled with your things from the day I got you. Since you didn’t want anything for your birthday I thought you maybe wanted to see what was in it with me?” “Of course, I’d love to.” We opened the box with only a blanket, a letter and a necklace. I picked up the letter with my name on and looked at the handwriting. “What are you waiting for? Open it!” I looked up at Karen and down at the letter again. As fast as I could I opened the letter and began to read it.

Dear Caitlin,

I don’t know how old you are now but when you read this you probably have many prejudices about us. You may think we gave you away because we didn’t love you but that’s not true. We knew you where in a lot of danger here. Bad people were trying to get you so we needed to get you away, away from them. Your father and me love you very much. We would really appreciate if you would try to find us. We have answers to why you maybe feel a little “different”. Where we are your not different in a way that makes uncomfortable but you are a special one my dear. You have something not many others have. You are something special.

The necklace will maybe give you some of your answers.

Truly yours Diana and John

“Karen, have you read this?” I ask with tears in my eyes and a shaky feeling in my body. “It wasn’t my place to read it honey. Are you okay?” She looked nervous at me. “I… can’t believe this!” I told her what the letter said and she pulled the necklace up from the box and gave it to me. I studied it from every ankle to see what they meant in the letter. I was a beautiful necklace. “That’s a good birthday present!” Karen tried to sound a little cheering but I couldn’t stop thinking about what those symbols meant. Karen walked out of my room but on her way out she said: “Happy 16th birthday honey and goodnight.”
