6. The World is Coming Down

The world is coming down on me
And I can't find a reason to be loved
I never wanna leave you
But I can't make you bleed if I'm alone

You put your arms around me
And I believe that it's easier for you to let me go

Ever since Fred's incident at the Astronomy tower, Hermione almost never left him alone. In the few small moments that she did, Fred fantasized. Sometimes about Hermione's future without him, sometimes about his own death. Either way, the night would always end with a bloody razor and George finding him passed out from blood loss on the floor of their dorm room. He hated himself for putting him and Hermione through so much pain.

Things were only getting worse, and his feelings were only growing stronger. His fake smile and loud jokes that he had hid behind for years began to fail as Hermione started to notice the pain behind them. Fred cursed himself for not being more careful, for acting on impulse and not waiting to be alone for him to kill himself.

Fred thought about breaking things off with Hermione. On one hand, he would be alone and so would she, but on the other hand, he wouldn't be able to hurt her anymore. They could grow distant and even their friendship would fade. She would have a future, marry happily, and get the job of her dreams. He tried bringing it up, but every time Fred did so, fear seized his heart and he stopped himself. He couldn't leave Hermione.

As time passed by, he and Hermione successfully became more distant. They were still together, and they still shared tender moments, but Fred noticed something different about his girlfriend. Her embraces and kisses, once so full of love and tenderness, seemed cold and routinized. Hermione had grown tired of looking after him. Fred didn't blame her, but that didn't stop the fear of her leaving him from nagging at the back of his mind.
